Worried about mum - fainting

My mum is very overweight, doesn't eat well and has poor mobility. She is almost 60 . But no matter what she will keep going and has a can do attitude even walking through a broken bone in the foot until it fused incorrectly .

I saw her today and she told me she fainted in the corner shop and two men had to help her up. They said she was very pale but she insisted on leaving the shop quickly and going home

She said she felt dizzy before she fainted and her balance has been a bit of .
But she has no history of fainting as such .

Never had an issue with blood pressure.
I asked her to go to the doctor to which she said she has an appointment and will discuss it then.

What kinds of things could cause this ?

Tia

It could be lots of things, given how you've described her, from heart troubles to diabetes, infection to neurological troubles. There are lots of things that can cause fainting or collapse.
She needs a physical examination from a doctor and blood/urine tests.

Really impossible to speculate as so many things can cause fainting, most of them easily treatable from anything to anaemia to blood pressure issues etc. It may even be just that she was tired / unwell / hot etc. As people get older these things tend to affect them a lot more (I know people will say 60 isn’t old and it isn’t particularly but it’s older than someone in their 20s for example!)

Thank you both for your replies ! She's has been severely low in iron in the past but never fainted .

She wouldn't have told us but she had my sister's children with her at the time and they would have told us.

Her parents were the type never to go to the doctors and only to the hospital if collapsed and couldn't say no .

I will keep on at her to get checked out thank you x

Syncopes or fainting should always be investigated in older people. I'm 50 and had a series of syncopes in January. My blood pressure is low.

I was sent for heart tests. Had a heart scan and a monitor. All came back good. I occasionally have the feeling I'm going to drop but manage to lie down with my feet elevated and eat ready salted crisps. I have no other health problems. Just low blood pressure which can't be treated like high blood pressure.

Your DM should get checked out. Perhaps have a word with her. The worst of the tests were a blood test. She may be nervous of doctors, but offer to go with her?

Thank you. She is going to mention it at her appointment on the 15th . She doesn't like to cause a fuss but sometimes things need checking out .
