Eye pressure

Fisharesexy · 06/10/2018 00:01

Went for eye test today.
Eye pressure was 23 & 26 with air puff thing, but 23/24 with the equipment that touches the actual eye ball with the blue light.
My optic nerve looks normal and peripheral field test was fine. She said that NICE had raised the eye pressure cut off from 21 to 24. So I was just inside and to come back in a year or 6 months.
My mum had glaucoma.
Any thoughts on this?

Also, my prescription for glasses was unchanged from last year.

Poundland do glasses.

Not sure what you're asking, Fish. If you're concerned, talk to your (or another second opinion) optician?

You could get the pressure checked at another optician if you're concerned it's glaucoma already. Or go again in 3 months rather than 6-12.

If you're still worried, find a Optometry practice with an OCT machine. It usually costs about £60, but it can scan the optic nerve head and surrounding nerve fibre layers in minute detail and consequently can often detect the very subtle early signs of glaucoma. Your current optician can refer you to another practice, so that you don't need to have another full eye examination.

Otherwise the advice of returning in 6 months is good, if they referred you, the hospital would do the same tests as the Optometrist has already done.

The referral criteria changed as they found that there was no benefit in treating patients who only had very slightly high eye pressure with glaucoma drops. Glaucoma drops (like any medication) can potentially have side effects.

I have had high pressures recorded with every eye tes, cue several referrals. The last one measured my corneas and said they were thicker than normal but perfectly healthy. Apparently the thickness affects the pressure recording

lazymum99 · 06/10/2018 20:45

It is important that you also measure the thickness of the corneas. this needs to be taken into account with the pressure reading and it would reduce by quite a lot if that is so. My eye pressure has always been on the top of ok but my corneas are thick, my optic nerve is fine and so nothing needs doing. I think you would need to be referred to an ophthalmologist to get this measurement done.

With family history I'd want it checked further. Your peripheral vision can decrease quickly.
