Waking every morning with a sore and stiff back

I wake up every morning with a sore and stiff back. Usually it takes a good 20 minutes to ease in where my back feels ok. The first 20 minutes or so, my back is sore and I find some things hard/sore to do like tying my shoes laces, wiping my bum (sorry, tmi).

I don't think it's the mattret because it happens when I sleep over in other places too, and hotels.

I had a doctor's appointment about three and half years ago and I mentioned it then and get said it's occupational. I've been mindful of my back since then with bending and lifting. I still wake with a sore back though.

I have a yoga ball in my room and I find if I stretch on the ball for 5/10/15 minutes, my back feels ok. Sometimes I don't have time for stretching in the ball, and then its slower to ease into the day.

I also find, if I wake and get up early, around about 6am, my back doesn't tend to be as sore. If I sleep past this, my back is sore.

Has anyone ever experienced waking with a sore back?

Yes. Yoga helps a lot when I can be arsed to actually do it.

Pilates is your friend

Once you've started the lessons or classes, you can add in some roll downs and cat stretches every morning as well

It's amazing and you'll notice the difference really soon after starting

It’s possible that vitamin d deficiency could contribute to the soreness you’re experiencing - my joints/muscles were fatigued/strained very easily when I was deficient. Worth discussing this with your gp

Thanks for your reply. I got bloods taken a few weeks ago. Would a vitamin D deficiency show up in a regular blood test?

I'm a great one for buying vitamins and minerals and I begin to take them, and then I lapse and not every day.

I could have written your post. I put it down to age and being a bit of a sloth.

I even bought a yoga dvd. It's still in it's wrapper. I really need to try it.

You could try a quick stretch before getting out of bed eg gently rocking knees to your chest while lying on your back for a minute or so. I do this 3 times every morning and also another stretch with one leg straight and the other knee pulled up to chest, then pulled diagonally across the body - you'll know where to pull to because you'll feel the stretch in your glutes.

Pilates and maybe vitamin D. Pilates transformed my back, I'm so much more flexible and an inch taller!
