Pain on my right side

I don't know if anyone here can help, but i would be greatful for any advice.

I've been having a pain in my side, around the rib area, for the past 3/4 years now, I went to the gp about it (about a year ago) who basically said that it's probably a pulled muscle. I don't have it all the time, sometimes I can go for months without it and all of a sudden, sharp pain, like someone has put a knife into my side. Other times it can just feel like a mild ache.

The problem is, the pain seems to have moved. It used to be on the side and now it's slowly moving around.

Does anyone know what this could be?

Gallbladder is my first thought.

I have something similar. Have had it for a few years too. Although for me a couple of inches below the ribs. I had a lot of investigation - ultrasound on gallbladder, colonoscopy, etc. The pain did seem to spread to other areas. Was eventually told it is chronic myofascial pain. I had a Botox injection into the muscles which helped a lot for a few months. I have learnt to live with it.
I have no idea if yours is this though. I would maybe follow it up with your GP if it's bothering you. You could get other things ruled out and maybe see a physio or a pain specialist.

Thank you for the replies. Mine seems to have migrated down below my ribs. It's worse when I've been drinking alcohol, then the pain is really bad. I'm worried it could be my liver.

It of an odd question, but do you have big boobs? I get a pain on my right ribs and the physio said it's muscular and where my bra cuts into my ribs with the pressure of my boob on top of it.

BippityBoppity87 · 10/10/2018 17:58

@Sal1977 I wouldn't say massive (I'm a 34GG/H) I don't know if that's huge or not, but I wouldn't say so for my build. I've never thought about that though and the GP never mentioned it. They did say it sounded muscular, but it's not always in the same place, which seemed odd to me.

What do you do for a job? Could it be posture related?

I think mine stems from twisting to the right over and over at work. It definitely hurts more when I twist. It also goes between my front and back ribs but definitely feels on the 'outside' rather than organ type pain IYKWIM?

BippityBoppity87 · 13/10/2018 22:22

Mine feels more like it's under the ribs. I work in bar, only 3 times a week though, so I don't think that's what it could be.

@Sal1977 I've been to physio with a similar pain, but mine can be anywhere from my shoulder blade to my bum on the right side. The physio can pinpoint tight areas that the pain is referring from. Like you, mine feels like it's outside not internal and if I use a tennis ball I can feel where the problem areas are too. Recently been back to the doctors and was told that I'm a recipe for this type of pain as I work in early years. I asked about the pain moving and he said that it's all connected do not unusual

sillysausage16 · 14/10/2018 00:14

@BippityBoppity87 defo not unusual for the pain to move - referred pain is common because of the size of the muscle which stretches from the shoulder to hip lattimus Dorsi or something like that. Also subconsciously you could be "saving" yourself where the site of the pain is, effecting your posture elsewhere

sillysausage16 · 14/10/2018 00:20

@MajesticWhine I've just googled chronic myofascial pain and it describes my pain exactly.

BippityBoppity87 · 14/10/2018 00:28

That reassuring @sillysausage16 thank you for your reply.
