Strawberry intolerance ? Is there such a thing ? What are the symptoms ?

I've noticed that if I have strawberries, even just a couple, it seems to trigger a feeling of real sickiness, pains in my stomach and a general feeling of crapness !

The pains are like a sick feeling really high up under my diaphragm - isn't that where your stomach is ? My tummy feels really bloated, swollen and uncomfortable too.

I can feel it build up and then die away after about 1-3 hours. During this time I need to go to the loo a few times whilst I have the pains. I don't have a really bad upset tum as you would with a tummy bug, but it gripes and then I need to go ! IYSWIM ....

The first time these episodes started I'd had a banana for brekkie.
Next time I'd drunk a big glass of 'Innocent' Smoothie with all sorts of fruit in it (incl. strawbs).
I had 3 strawbs this evening & it's started again.

I feel really sick and sick in my stomach.

I had a huge bowl of cherries on Sat eve but these didn't seem to effect me.

I love fruit and have always been able to eat all kinds so I'm mortified if I've suddenly developed some sort of intolerance.

Anyone experienced anyone experience anything similar ?

My friend has a really serious allergy to fresh strawberries - had to rush her to a&e once as her eyes puffed up and her throat closed.

Have you developed it after being preggers recently?

Just asking cause my mate became allergic to Broccoli

I became allergic to Hazelnuts, both after giving birth to our now 3 year olds!

DTDs responded to strawberries with Diahrroea when they were younger. They seem to have grown out of it now but the symptoms are not unrelated to yours.

hi strawberries cause what's known as a 'false food allergy'. This doesn't mean your symptoms aren't real, it just means they don't involve IgE antibodies like a 'true' allergy, they are triggered by certain peptides (small molecules related to proteins) instead. Shellfish, egg white, tomatoes and other foods can also trigger allergic symptoms this way. The good news is that (a) it's possible to grow out of false food allergies and (b) increasing magnesium in your diet might help you to become less sensitive. I'd suggest avoiding strawberries for a while, though.

I only know this stuff because it's in Jonathan Brostoff's 'Complete Guide to Food Allergy and Intolerance' which has become my bible over the past few years. Oh, and my dad used to react to raw tomatoes but is fine now.
