Migraines 😩

Just hoping someone might have a magic cure that I can use for migraines...

I have had them every few weeks since I was a teenager unfortunately and never really managed to get them under control. I take propranolol daily which helps and I am no longer on any hormonal contraception as think that wasn’t helping. But today I have had another awful one and feel so sick! I have sumitriptan which help a bit but don’t really fully get rid of them - the only thing that works is sleeping for a solid few hours. If I am sick sometimes they go as well but I don’t want to be hanging around the loo hoping to be sick 😩 I also have a five month old baby so even more desperate than ever for the bloody migraines to stop!

Please tell me all of your migraine secrets?!

I found the only thing that worked was rigorous lifestyle measures (which would be hard to do with such a little baby): getting up and going to bed at pretty much the same time each day, avoiding getting hungry or dehydrated, not rushing around too much. Mine are triggered by low pressure in the weather and by my cycle and if I take painkillers and have some sugar and a strong coffee as soon as I notice one coming on, I can usually control them. However, the only thing that has really made a difference is the Mirena coil - it seems like a low dose of hormones has really helped.

I got specialist advice from London Migraine Clinic - I found the GP pretty useless.

So I just wanted to offer some words of encouragement, as having suffered them on and off through my 20s and badly in my 30s, at 46 they do seem to be more or less gone.

I have had migraines for 26 years, since I was primary school age. They've changed across that time, but I've always had them. Mine were quite hormonal based, always had one around my period, but could also be triggered by low blood sugar, being too hot, being stressed, bright lights. For a while I even got them if I was excited about something.

I've been taking pizotifen for them for years, plus sumatriptan. Earlier this year I had about 6 acupuncture sessions and I am now 75 days migraine free, which might not be much to some people, but is amazing for me!

Oh, also I find throwing up gets rid of them but I do whatever I can not to get to that stage, as I am a teacher and it is extremely inconvenient! (not that throwing up is desperately convenient for anyone...!)

Sumatriptan didn't work for me but Naratriptan does about 90% of the time. .

As soon as I feel a migraine coming, I take sumatriptan and aspirin washed down with full fat coke. If I can sleep for an hour, so much the better. I quite often get woken up by migraine so I now have a full set of the magic ingredients in my bedside drawer. I don't care if it's 3 am, I'm drinking the fat coke!

Dc2 finds zolmitriptan plus aspirin the best combination so far.

Hi op I tried the Tristan nasal sprays as I'm sick for up to 8 hrs when I have a migraine so can't keep tablets down. However they didn't really work for me. I find if I can take a triptan tablet quickly enough at the onset and then get some sleep it will often go away.
But if I wake up with one the meds don't work and Im out of it for 3 days or so.
Migraines seem so hit and miss. I feel for you as I find them extremely debilitating

frisky my daith piercing was fine, obviously hurt as it was put in but healing time was days and it's never caused me any problems in the 10 years I've had it. If my migraines get worse I wouldn't hesitate having the other ear done. I got it done for fashion and it was a welcome side effect that it helped my migraines!

So much helpful advice here thank you! Although it makes me sad how many of us suffer with them. Maybe someone will actually find a cure one day!!

Often mine are dehydration related. I drink a pint of water, more if I can and it helps.
Also rinse a flannel in cold water, squeeze out and put on your forehead. Anything that cools my head down also seems to help. You can buy patches to do this too
