My daughter reads brilliantly, even teeny weeny text and seems to have no struggle seeing the board or television from a distance or read signs from a distance, using both one eye and then two but she cannot read anything either up close or far away when we visit the opticians and I mean anything she just calls out random letters. Have covered her eye to read things with the other and then switch round again and she reads things brilliantly. Also tested her on tiny single letters and she doesn’t struggle at all. Just don’t get it at all?!? Any ideas. She doesn’t like to make mistakes so I’m wondering if she finds the tests too stressful so doesn’t try at all. She’s 8. Confused! I’m wondering if it’s the background colour, really confused.

Which optician are you going to? I ask because I have found independent opticians to be better than big chains at in depth assessments, they also take a bit longer and may find a way around anxiety if that’s what it is. They can assess with images rather than letters, you may let them know in advance and ask if they can start that way?

It’s spec savers, she was also looked at at the hospital for a while and I found exactly the same thing happened, except when they did one of the tests with a different optician and they seemed surprised that she was able to read what they were showing her, and then she was discharged, just never seems to get explained. We are going back to have the drops done to see if that helps her.
