Constant use of barrier cream during nappy changes

Wasn't sure whether to put this under health or nappies - sorry!

I always use a thin layer of cream after changing my 3 month old's nappy. Currently using Sudocream - with ds1 I always used zinc and castor oil cream but this time around I struggled to find one without peanut oil in the ingredients so stuck with Sudocream.

We use disposables, and have always been happy using a thin layer after each change after ds1 got bad nappy rash when he was little and the doctor recommended it as he pointed out it was a protector and we'd have sore bottoms if we wore paper pants 24hrs a day too.

However, a friend today looked horrified and said that she thought extended use of sudocream thinned the skin. I have never heard of this before but am now really worried.

Advice please!

Meant to add, ds2's bottom is absolutely beautiful and gets sore extremely rarely which I attribute to always using the thin layer of cream...

Overuse of hydrocortisone cream can hin the skin over a longish period of time, but I don't think the same can be said for sudocrem! I don't think you need to worry, but if I'm wrong, I've learned something new today! any health professionals out there who know?

no Sudocream does not thin the skin, hopefully as when ds and dd were babies, midwife recommended it, as the best on the market!!

didn't use it at every change as midwife said it made nappy less absorbent or something...but used a lot and very safe to use as much as you like really

Yes - HV also said to go easy on it, but like Twiglett, we only use it in the event of any redness and it clears it up pronto.
Sudocrem has been around for years and as far as I know, the skin on my brothers bottom has survived and he's 26 now (much younger than me)! I was old enough to help with his (terry) nappies then and we used loads of sc!! He'd hate me telling everyone this - should be ok though - he and his wife have no kids - yet!!

How about using aqueous (sp)cream if you really want to use something. It's lanolin free and like E45, the mildest of the mild. You can buy own brands, they're much cheaper than E45 but much the same
