Health anxiety - teeth ache

awkwardsitch · 29/09/2018 20:54

I've got on/off throbbing teeth. Mainly front two but does move. I had the exact same thing in July and I went to my dentist three times in a week, normal xrays etc and eventually it went away. I'm now going to crazy levels of anxiety again as it's back again. Any ideas??

I get this on and off when I've got a mild sinus infection. Not even an infection but now like a mild chill or cold. Sometimes I get a 'zinging' in my gums or cheek bone too. It's quite common apparently and goes away after a few days.

awkwardsitch · 29/09/2018 21:11

Ah that's interesting to hear. Thank you. When I had it in July, a bad cold appeared about ten days afterwards so wondered if it was linked. No cold now but my god they throb.

Sounds to me like you're either getting a cold or that you have a bit of sinus going on. Honestly nothing to worry about, my friend and my mother all get this too! The nerves in our gums can become inflamed along with our sinuses at times.

awkwardsitch · 30/09/2018 10:29

I really hope so. It comes and goes so I feel pretty ok for a while then bam! I've smothered rapidrelief on. Thank you for replying.

I’ve just been diagnosed with atypical ondontalgia - aching teeth, burning gums, but nothing is actually wrong with my teeth, and I have no gum disease. Apparently my nerves are all mis-firing. I was told by the consultant (maxillo facial) that stress can trigger it, which fits for me. I’ve been offered medication to basically blunt the nerves, but the side effects are apparently horrible. I saw my own dentist about 500 times, actually pleaded with her to extract my teeth (front ones too!), then was referred to MF, and over the last six months have had loads of tests, including an MRI.

Having a diagnosis is a relief as I have been terrified my teeth were falling to bits.

awkwardsitch · 30/09/2018 21:33

Judy you're me. Oh god what a relief to hear of someone else with the same. Neuropathy has been mentioned before but now another dentist says Root canal. I've found a practice who specialise in diagnosing dental pain so will try that but my god my front teeth feel like they're bleeding inside and will snap off.

awkward I know it’s not for everyone, and apologies if you are offended by this, but the thing which has helped me most is a homeopathic remedy called hypericum. I buy the Weleda brand tablets. The MF consultant told me that having root canal would not help me at all, and that even if the teeth were extracted I would most likely still have the pain - and be toothless!

I had a bad year teeth-wise last year because I started clenching my teeth at night due to stress - DP was made redundant. By the time the dentist suggested I was clenching, I had basically ruined my back teeth and needed four root canals, one of which ended up eventually being extracted. Immediately after the extraction I developed a weird tingling/buzzing feeling round my gums and lip which has grown gradually worse. My pain and burning is all round the same area, but goes to my upper teeth too - it never crosses the “midline” to the other side of my mouth. I wear a nightguard for the clenching now, and it’s a bit better now DP is working again, but it’s a hard habit to break.

My dentist was great about referring me on (possibly just really sick of me!) and the consultant at Max-Fac has been so kind. At my last appointment he ordered me to go off and eat a crusty baguette, because I have been really scared about eating with those teeth.

Could it be Trigeminal Neuralgia?

I have this and it comes and goes, take a look on the Facebook group, there's lots of people with different experiences of it, many similar to yours.

Rudgie47 · 30/09/2018 22:44

You can have one tooth that's infected and it can make all your teeth hurt on and off. I know because I've gone through this a lot. Also infected teeth do not always show up on xrays either.

I think with teeth it can be a bit of a waiting game, unless its absolutely agonising. It could be loads of things. Hope you find an answer to your problem. Have you asked for antibiotics? if its an infection then this will stop it and if not you can then rule that out.

Rudgie47 · 30/09/2018 22:55

Might be over sensitive teeth. Have you tried brushing with Sensodine? Its worth a try for 3 quid.

awkwardsitch · 01/10/2018 05:44

Yes rudgie I'm far far past the sensodyne route

So conflicting..,
Yesterday ooh dentist said dying root
My own dentist today along with another dentist in the practice said X-ray is normal as has always been.

Either way he's sending me off to an endodontist to investigate the pain. It's neuropathic I believe - a burning pain. A dentist two years ago said neuropathy but then it stopped so I wrongly believed it had gone for good. Had it on and off since wearing braces a few years ago but seems to be back with a vengeance.

An endodontist does root canals, so if the teeth have dead/dying nerves he or she is the best possible person to help, but major £££! (I think front teeth may be cheaper - my back teeth cost almost £2,000.)

Movingtobucks · 01/10/2018 20:33

Me too, OP. Just been to the dentist with on/off dull ache in teeth, she took X-rays and said it was my sinuses.

Ucantpo1ishaturd · 01/10/2018 20:38

Same problem with me on and off, Dentist said Stress apparently I grind my Teeth when asleep am on CBD oil now and am much better.

purplecorkheart · 01/10/2018 20:40

Next time you are at your GP it might be worth asking them to check your ears. I had a problem with dental pain and it was actually partly caused by an ear condition.

headinhands · 01/10/2018 20:43

I get this and it's always related to a cold. It feels like there are too many teeth in my top jaw all of a sudden and they ache like crazy.

Maverick66 · 01/10/2018 20:46

Stress and hormones cause a similar pain for me.
Just before my period my teeth get very sensitive and/or achy.
This started with the perimenopause I was around 38.

awkwardsitch · 02/10/2018 05:30

When I say ache I mean pain levels up there with childbirth...

OP posts:
OuchLegoHurts · 02/10/2018 23:30

Oh no that doesn't sound like sinus after all then. The ache from a cold/sinus is a dull, tingly, almost headachy ache if you know what I mean. It's sore and tiring but not anywhere near childbirth pain!
