Mild asthma attack, no inhaler, anything I can take/do?

Been having this attack for nearly three hours, still mild, just effort to breathe, very wheezy etc

Asthma hasn't bothered me for years so I don't have an inhaler in the house, does anyone know of anything I can do to calm it down? I was hoping it would calm down by itself if I just breathed deeply for a while but it isn't going, and the baby compressing everything upwards doesn't help!

None of my friends/family have asthma so wouldn't have inhalers (plus it's 1.30am)dp is fast asleep upstairs, don't really want to try and find a doctor since it's a mild attack, he's got to be up for work in a few hours.

Any ideas?

Thanks cali, I took an antihistamine in case hayfever isn't helping, going to try to sleep a bit, if it gets worse we'll have to go to the hospital I spose. Seems such a pita when the attack is only mild though!

Caffeine can help. Also cold night air can sometimes help. You may want to get an inhaler prescribed for the pregnancy. I found that my asthma which was really almost non-existant went haywire when I was pregnant. It got so bad that I was waking up 2 or 3 times in a night with an attack. Went away again after I gave birth.

Hi, just to let you know it did go eventually and I've ordered inhalers off my doctor today, thanks for your advice and concern last night!

Definitely keep those inhalers close to hand. My asthma is usually very well controlled, but since being pregnant it has been really bad. I've had 4 A&E visits, a week in hospital, I'm on steroids till the baby is born and just finished my 7th course of antibiotics. They explained to me that some women with asthma do get a lot worse during pregnancy. In my case they say I have gastric reflux, due to hormones relaxing the stomach sphincter, which means acid is coming up and then I'm inhaling it into my lungs, triggering asthma. Btw, I don't have classic signs of reflux, ie no heartburn or pain etc, they've been calling it silent reflux. They say gravity helps, so have to sleep well propped up. If you're getting your asthma at night I wonder if something similar may be going on. I also have to take something to neutralise the acidity of my stomach.

Hope you're feeling better now. Don't underestimate asthma when you're pregnant. I never dreamt things could get this bad. (Previous 2 pregnancies my asthma actually improved, this thing follows no pattern at all). Take care, and as I say, keep those inhalers close by.

Thanks kinki. This is the first time it has happened in years. I know what started the asthma attack (the most stupid reason in the world)

Last nigth the heavens opened and the rain came down in monsoon like proportions, it was absolutely torrential. My boyfriend had just opened the back door to have a look, and told me to go look. So I went to look, he stayed on the sofa. Just as I was looking at the rain, completely deafened by it, I started to have a crazy thought that all the spiders in the back yard might want to come in where it was warm and dry, it gave me the creeps!

So I slammed the door shut, and then suddenly I saw something move like an inch or two from my face, so I panicked and SCREAMED the house down, doing a little dance of fear on the spot. It wasn't a spider, it was my boyfriend. I think I gave him a fright too!

Anyway I had scared myself so much I burst into tears (of course, he was virtually on the floor laughing at this point) and promptly had an asthma attack.

How daft is that????

The weird thing is, I'm not even that scared of spiders, but I've turfed at least four out the house in the past week so my spider senses must have been jangling! D'oh.

sit a table.....rest head on arms on table [like youdid at school when dozed off in lesson]

this increases lung capacity

breathe calmly through nose...until you relax...then phone doctor......

hope get it sorted x
