Plastics in Microwave

I have regularly put the Avent bottle (sans nipple) for a few seconds, Ikea plastic plates and bowls, and other 'microwavable' plastic in the microwave. I just read that you should never put plastic in the microwave because they emit cancerous toxins. But these plastic items are specifically marked 'microwavable'. Does anyone know the truth about plastics in the microwave?? TIA.

almost40, I do exactly the same as you. Always assumed if it is marked "microwavable" then it would be safe.

hi Almost 40. I read an interesting article on WHICH? magazine a few months back which was specifically about this very topic.Unfortunately I don't have it anymore but I think it will be in their archives www.which.co.uk/whichextra or email them at [email protected].
It was a very interesting and slightly worrying article if, like me, you tend to chuck any old thing intp the mocrowave! unless the receptacle is specifically designed for microwave use you should never put it inthe micro as the plastic and plastic fumes/chemicals will leach intot he food/liquid contained within. That was the general gist of the article .Hope that helps.

Thanks, Donnie and Hercules. Hercules, I can't open the link, but will try again later. The article I read said ALL plastics should not go in the microwave - even those designated as 'microwavable'.
