When are they supposed to close?

Ds1's have already closed, and he's not quite 8m. Any significance?

Um, not ds1 - he's not quite 7y! - I meant ds2 of course.

Nobody know anything about this?

are you sure it has closed completely..the membrane is really tough?

PrettyCandles · 12/06/2007 21:53

I can't find it - have been able to do so before - nor could the HV at ds2's 8m check, and she has marked it 'Observation' in his red book. She didn't refer me back to the GP, but said that I should draw the GP's attnetion to it next time we go. Ds2's development is good, hence her lack of alarm at this, but still...

if in any doubt, seek a second opinion

MW casually mentioned that DD had a small soft spot at 2 weeks old. I googled 'small soft spot' and spent the next 18 months panicking about it [vicarious hypochondriach emoticon] . It had totally closed over by about 8 months (maybe a bit earlier), but the doc was completely unconcerned about it. Didn;t stop me from anxiously measuring her head every few weeks though .

It's very reassuring that your DS is developing normally. From what I recall from my extensive 'research' (read fretful poring over internet medical sites), there would be clear signs that something was amiss if the absent fontanelle was due to the bones fusing too early. e.g. poor development, noticeably misshapen head, seizures...

A small/absent fontanelle is not in itself a cause for concern.

Thanks, SC (and Lulumama). I did Google, but then stopped after one or two items, as I could see this was one of the cases when too much information could lead to panic through lack of filtering!
