I called DH at 5pm from work and he was helping DS have a poo. When I got home at 6pm he was still trying to go. His poor bum... I can see a huge stool sticking out a bit that won't come out. A small amount dropped off then about 6.30pm I put a nappy on him came downstairs and he fell asleep. Called 111 who said to rub his tummy and see doc tomorrow plus general constipation advice which isn't that helpful as he has never been constipated before. He had a nasty stomach bug last weekend though and I think perhaps is still a bit dehydrated.
Anyway have woken him a tiny bit in his nappy but still a large visible stool sticking out. I don't know what to do he doesn't want to eat or drink and is totally miserable. Feel like I can't leave him like this all night? Running a warm deep bath now... he's falling asleep sitting up though

Lots of vaseline around bum, lie him on back and cycle his legs slowly (alternate knees up to chest).

Push gently alternating each side of his bum cheeks (right next to his anus) and it'll soon come out (preferably while he's sitting on loo).

Try lying him on his back and rubbing firmly on his tummy in a clockwise direction, start at his right pelvic bone up to under rib, across, down to left pelvic bone, across to right pelvic bone.

Firmly but not hard. This is the direction of travel so to speak to try and move things along.

Then you can try laying hand across tummy under rib and rubbing down , one hand after the other.

I find it easier doing this on top of tshirt rather than rubbing on skin ( you tend to stick to skin and drag it)

Do this for a few minutes.

Drink of warm water might help too.

Thanks for the advice. A little more dropped out and now I can't see anything which is good though I'm sure there's more there. Put him in the bath for a bit and he is now more himself and has requested dinner - don't know if eating is the best idea but he didn't really have lunch so he must be really hungry. Trying to get him to drink plenty too but a warm drink is a good idea. Will then try rubbing his tummy in a bit. He's still got pain he won't sit down properly poor thing.
Thanks again I didn't know what to do.

Bit worried about leaving him to go to work tomorrow though. I'm only doing a short day but still. So difficult had two days off last week because of the sickness bug him and his brother had.

I'm sure it'll be out by then, if it's on its way anyway :)

Could also get infant movicol from Gp-it’s a stool softener.

My daughter had awful constipation as a toddler (a milk thing) and we used to lay her on her back and cycle her legs and bring her knees up to her chest. It would really help. We also gave her daily lactulose. Not that I'm saying you should give it daily but just to say it does no harm and is a gentle way to help loosen him up over tomorrow. You could give him a spoon tonight and it should help if the constipation is going to last a day or two more.

I'm 22 weeks pregnant and feel his pain. It's desperate and so much worse for little ones. Will he drink prune juice or those Ella's kitchen prune sachets? They always worked for dd.

I have given lactulose to dc at that age. You can buy it over the counter and it includes dosage instructions for children. He may well only need one dose. You have to make sure they drink plenty if they do take it but it should help.
