gabapentin side effects

I have nerve pain, currently taking codeine and naproxen but codeine is making me feel nauseous.

Gabapentin has been suggested, is this likely to also make me feel sick? Anyone on it and can tell me what side effects they had and did they last?

Feel like a have a choice between feeling pain or feeling sick at the moment, and it's hobson's choice!

How long did that take Patsy? and did you have any other side effects? And the most important question, did it sort out the pain?

I'm also on tramadol and paracetamol. The gabapentin helps but nothing gets rid of my pain. It's such a bore.

Sorry, can't remember how long exactly before the drowsiness went away, but I think it was short-lived - a month or less.

LittleMissedTheSunshine · 24/09/2018 16:03

Sorry to hear that Patsy. I'm new to all this, three weeks ago I had never suffered with any pain/nerve related conditions and was enjoying starting a new chapter in my career and now I'm in constant pain and wondering how long until I lose my job.

My GP described gabapentin as a "nerve bamboozler", which seems pretty accurate. It works for that - sciatica, for instance, and may be very effective if that's your main problem. I have actual injury with damaged bones and ligaments, and it can't help with that. I don't get sciatica anymore, though, which is a blessing.

Haven't tried gabapentin but take pregabalin. I have no side effects from it but did start with a very low dose and then built it up slowly.

Hopefully you will be able to start with a low dose at weekends, that way you can make a decision on how much you feel it will affect work.

Have been treated with gabapentin combined with Amytriptaline and strong codeine for nerve pain. It took a while to scale up to the dose which gave me the best pain relief and kept the symptoms under control, but had to scale down slightly to keep some of the more unwelcome side effects at bay (brain fog, tiredness etc) but I was on extremely high dosage. Without it I couldn't function (was dosed on morphine until the gaba kicked in at higher doses). It isn't without side effects, and I can't see why anyone would want to take it unless they were in the most awful pain, but I understand they are looking at whether to add it to the controlled drugs list, as it is abused by some people. Good luck OP.

I also found that, because I started on a low dose and built up slowly to minimise side effects, it took a while to reach a sufficient dose to control the pain. It did help a lot though. I've been taking it for 2 years now without side effects.

Thanks all, well I think i am gonna wait for my consultant appointment and MR results in 2 weeks as I am seeing a slight improvement in symptoms/pain. As an experiment I stopped the codeine today (just had naproxen) as I'm feeling sick and headachey and don't know if its the codeine or not. Also wanted to see what I can tolerate pain wise. So far, just a dull ache that I can cope with but I am lying in bed doing not very much so not sure how that would work if I was more active and I've just had a hot bath, which helped.

Hey hun 💕 I totally feel you — that “pain or pukey” dilemma is the worst. Been there, trust me. I was in a pretty similar boat not long ago — nasty nerve pain, codeine making my stomach churn like a washing machine, and I was just done.

I switched to Neurontin (Gabapentin), and honestly - best decision I made. The first few days were a bit weird — I had some dizziness and felt kinda foggy, like I was walking around in a dream. But that passed pretty quickly once my body adjusted. Nothing compared to the nausea codeine gave me. And no stomach upset at all!

I actually ordered my Gabapentin from this trusted pharmacy: topsup24.com/buy-neurontin-uk.html, got it super fast and it worked like a charm. Plus, I noticed way fewer side effects than with some of the stuff I’ve gotten locally.

My little tip: start low and go slow. That really helped me ease in without too many side effects. Everyone’s body reacts a bit differently, but for a lot of people (myself included), Gabapentin ends up being a lifesaver without the yuckiness of opioids.

Wishing you lots of relief soon — and don’t settle for suffering, seriously 💪

I have been on Gabapentin for about 10 years now, but I am on the lowest dose 100mg three times per day, I take it for tingling in my face and tongue and skin crawling and sunburnt sensations due to fibromyalgia. I was spaced out a bit at first but got used to it, if i miss a dose the bloody tingling comes back arrggh
