Dry socket

Hi!

I had a tooth extracted and pretty sure it's the dreaded dry socket - can see bone etc and in terrible pain.

Does anyone have any experience of this? Do I really need to go back to the dentist or can I see this through at home? They thought of going back fills me with horror.

Thanks so much

You will need antibiotics if its dry socket and you need to return to the dentist's surgery because it should be treated by a dentist. Do not therefore try and see this through without such medical attention.

See your dentist ASAP. Your socket will need packing and you will probably need antibiotics and pain relief. It's the worst pain. You will be in and out of the dentist chair in minutes. Please go.

I had it and didn't go back to dentist as I'm terrified of them so the first time was bad enough. Got through it with strong painkillers and ice packs. It was really painful though and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

DH is a dentist. Get an appointment tomorrow am

gamerchick · 23/09/2018 17:40

Go back and they'll pack it for you. You'll feel much better once it's packed. Don't see it through, you have a big wound in your head and bone on display. Dont risk an infection it's not worth it.

They pack the cavity with a concoction involving cloves. It's vile but helps with the excruciating pain. It may need doing a couple of times. Don't avoid the dentist, they are your friend on this one.

Honestly dry socket is excruciating. I had it, and was taken my DHs tramadol (naughty!) and that didn’t touch the pain! I couldn’t get into an emergency dentist over the weekend so had to wait it out till the Monday morning, the dentist packed it, whilst still painful it was nowhere near the agony I’d endured for 48 hours!

I was also given anti biotics, the horrible ones beginning with M that you cannot drink with!

It's getting unbearable I'm calling out of hours now. I've got amoxicillin in the cupboard I might take one soon if possible

Go back to the dentist. I had it and it was the worst pain I've ever experienced. I would to through labour 10 times again before that. I couldn't really take time off work to go to the dentist and saw it through with strong strong painkillers and ice packs but I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy! Hope you are sorted and in less pain soon Flowers

Judydreamsofhorses · 23/09/2018 20:45

Antibiotics won’t help, it’s not an infection. You need to have it packed with brown hairy stuff, something like Alvogyl is its name. Definitely get an appointment ASAP.

MrsSkeffington · 23/09/2018 21:46

Going to go sit in the dentists tomorrow until someone sees me - going to get down there for 8!

Hope you manage to see a dentist this morning Smile

MrsSkeffington · 24/09/2018 09:46

Yes - it was dry socket - it's been packed and fiddled with to stimulate bleeding - terribly sore at the moment

Glad you managed to see someone, the pain is horrendous. Hope your on the mend soon! Flowers

Ilovewhippets · 24/09/2018 13:51

You poor thing. I've had it and you have all my sympathy.

MrsSkeffington · 24/09/2018 14:11

It hurts still - according to google I thought this would help instantly. How long will it take?

Mine was only partially dry - half the clot was still there and the dentist said it would have healed normally - but I had pretty much instant relief from the packing stuff. I was doing revolting mouthwashes with hot salty water and clove oil before it was packed and I think that helped a bit. Maybe the fact the dentist scraped it to make it bleed has irritated it more and it will settle over time? Hope you get some relief soon.

RainbowsArePretty · 25/09/2018 11:35

A dry socket is horrendous! Hope you feel better soon. My dentist cleaned it and packed it but as I had no sigh of infection they delayed ABs as no sign of infection at that time
