I know it's been done loads, but can someone please recommend something that works on head lice

DD's have had lice on and off for a few weeks, I've been wet combing every 2/3days but I just can't get rid of them. There are a few larger ones and lots of nits/eggs, so I'm not sure if they are being re-infected, but I am getting desparate.

DD1's teacher even mentioned it and I know they are not supposed to, I'm not offended, but am embarrased for them and me.

Help - please tell me what you've tried that actually works.

With wet combing, have you been using loads of conditioner? Stops them running away, and loosens their grip on the hair so you can get them out more easily. And a Nitty Gritty comb, not any old one from the chemist. Sympathies, too - it's miserable, isn't it.

Nitty Gritty comb is fantastic.

Have you checked everyone in the household, including yourself?

I've found that loads of conditioner and wet combing every 2/3 days until 14 days after I found the last one works.

How are you doing the combing? How long for?

Thank you FF - I do feel this is last chance saloon, I do use tons of conditioner and a nitty gritty, but have to be careful as DD1 has had psoriasis on her scalp in the past. She doesn't have any now and I think it's be exasserbated or even caused by her scratching (due to lice). So, I just need to get rid of them. Off to buy Derbac in the morning and fingers crossed.

Read the netdoctor thing, yuk at the thought of public lice.

You can get it on prescription. I think I'd check with pharmacist or GP if you get them to prescribe that it's OK to use in view of the psoriasis too.

I'd recommend checking everyone in the household because you can treat your dd's and get rid of them, but if, say, you have them and don't realise, they'll just get them straight away again.

don't use chemicals, they are of questionable safety, don't really work, encourage the lice to eveolve so as to become immune to them and put huge amounts of money into the pockets of the big pharmaceutical comanies. Use lots of conditioner an wet comb then if you find any, use Hedrin or Lice Attack - both cocoa butter based products that smother the little b,,,,,ds in a very psychologically satisfying way. Then use them again exactly 7 days later to kill any recent hatchings. Problem sorted.

Surfermum - have checked myself and I'm clear, but have had infestations in the past . Even so, I always comb through with nitty gritty when I wash my hair just in case. DH is fine and ds has had them before, but is clear now - again I always comb through when I wash his hair too.

Girls both have bobs and I go through it very throughly, am so fed up with it.

Sorry, I didn't mean to teach Grandma to suck eggs, I wasn't sure if you knew. I've probably insulted you now by calling you Grandma! .

Dsd has had them for 7 years (she doesn't live with us). I have spent HOURS in the shower combing hers out. We only get rid of them for her when she comes to us for a week or more, but by the next visit she generally has them back again .

My methods are tried and tested and work on myself and dd though. Dh gets off scot free - he's bald!

babygrand · 10/06/2007 21:47

I would use Hedrin - they don't seem immune to it yet!

Trinityrhino · 10/06/2007 21:49

thats because hedrin drowns them, dont think you can become immune to drowning
