Chronic vitamin D deficiency?

In 2017 I was deficient in vitamin D - my result was around 15. I had an injection and was prescribed tablets for a year. I have received a letter from my GP stating that I’m deficient AGAIN this year. I am absolutely so confused as to why I’m still deficient? (I’m not sure of the exact result as the letter doesn’t say). Can someone shed some light as to why I’m not absorbing Vitamin D?

  • October - January: daily GP prescription of 400IU.
  • January - now: I bought supplements from Holland and Barrett: 3000IU Oral Spray, 4000IU tablets and multivitamin supplement which includes 10UG of vitamin D daily.
  • Also since January: 250MG Magnesium supplement to aid my vitamin D absorption.

I spent August in Bali (sunbathing etc) along with 3 other smaller holidays in 2018. I am also active, I walk a lot and go for hikes, walks along the canal etc. (I do spend most of the day indoors as I work in an office). This summer I wore skirts and sleeveless dresses too. I am 22, female, BMI 22, no other health issues. Would appreciate any advice as to why I’m still low as I have been making an active effort to improve it over the past year.

This is so interesting. Thanks for all the v useful information pp.

I have mine tested yearly as part of my diabetes bloods. The last couple of years they have been below 20.
I was only prescribed 400iu a day tablets and I was a NIGHTMARE at taking them. I'm not sure why tbh as I take so much medication (but not pills iyswim).

I definitely have the bone pain. Exhaustion I've put down to other things. I generally have gotten used to feeling like utter shite. Full time pretty demanding job, single parent to two v demanding DC (one is having a v hard time ATM) plus a chronic health condition. I haven't had my hair cut in over a year. I need to make time for me!

So, I should be ordering the spray and as high as I can find? Can anyone tell me when I should expect to feel a difference? I know it takes a long time. But if I have an idea to work towards it would help.
Many thanks Brew

@user1471530109 (OP here) I went from a level of under 15 last year and I’m now at about 200 so I’m almost too high hahaBlush

I did everything listed in my OP to raise my levels. I definitely recommend the oral spray - I think the Oral spray is the reason why I’m now on such a high level honestly because it’s so easy to administer more than one spray. Try the 3000iu Holland and Barrett one and you can drop down to the 1000iu later. The D3 from the spray enters your body faster as it directly enters your bloodstream rather than through your digestive system with tablets. Has your GP been giving you vitamin D injections?

Can’t really comment on how long it takes to feel better as it’s all a bit of a blur. Sometimes I still get muscle fatigue and sore joints, but a year of supplements later I do feel much better. I felt better after the first loading dose - had much more energy day to day

Reading with interest. I was prescribed 2 X 800 iu of vitamin D in June 2017 and after 6 months told to drop down to 1 X 800. When I was re tested in June this year my levels were lower than when I was first diagnosed deficient! Since then I have been bumped back up to 2X 800iu a day (by endocrine consultant) GP was slightly concerned as seemingly she’s never heard of anyone being on this high a dose Confused anyhow since then I have also had a loading dose to start me off for vitamin B12 injections. I have hypothyroidism (20 years) and and permanently low on iron (been on prescription iron for over a decade) Coeliac blood tests all negative. I only work a few hrs a week because I can barely get off the sofa so finally diagnosed M.E/CFS & fibromyalgia in 2016 BUT surely the pain and exhaustion is all related to ongoing deficiencies? Is there anything else anyone thinks I need testing for? I’m desperate, feel like my life is over and wondering when I need to downsize to a bungalow because I can barely manage to hoover let alone take DC for days out - any advice appreciated. TIA.

Get a SAD light and do some short bursts on the sun bed, also get out in the sun as possible; also get checked for celiacs X
