We have an appointment in about an hour (apparently they are very busy tonight). He has been vomiting since last night and can't keep anything down, not even water. Can't help but worry about him, also can't imagine what the Dr can possibly do about it?

Poor little man. Maybe they will give him some anti-emetics?

MrsSpoon · 09/06/2007 20:18

Oh so they can give him something then, that would be good. I am panicing about them keeping him in a putting him on a drip, I'm not sure I can drive back home without him.

I was taken in to hospital witha similar problem a while back and they gave me some rehydrating stuff and chucked me out. Really hope they sort him out without having to keep him in.

MrsSpoon · 09/06/2007 20:22

Thanks HM and PW, that's reassuring.

If they do put him on a drip you will almost certainly be able to stay with him.

24hrs is not a mega length of time. DD3 has been longer (although keeping sips of water down)...and GP was not too concerned - although was cricised by HV.

fryalot · 09/06/2007 20:59

my gp sent me home when I took dd2 after she had been vomiting everything back up for 3 days!

She was fine, and stopped being sick almost as soon as we got back from the docs!

good luck

Had same problem with my ds - they said to keep giving him tiny bits of lucozade or lemonade and not to worry if most threw up - if it just stayed down for 5 minutes he'd get some of what he needed out of it. You'll be able to stay if he's admitted - it's v scary, but at least he'll be in the right place.

MrsSpoon · 10/06/2007 01:48

We are just back, thanks for all your messages. DS2 (he has just turned 5) is home and seems to be improving.

The out of hours Dr was undecided whether to send him home or admit him, I went for the send him home option, then DS2 promptly puked and DH had a panic and asked for him to be admitted, telling DS2 "Daddy will stay with you" I wanted to stay. Dr went off to arrange and I promptly burst into tears.

The hospital he was admitted to is about 15 miles away so we went back home and got his stuff (Dr seemed to think he would be put on a drip at this point and would almost certainly be in overnight). When we got to the hospital they considered putting him on a drip but decided to give him rehydrate, 5 mils every 5 mins. They were concerned that he hadn't passed urine for a long time and wanted a sample from him, when we lifted him to go for a wee he was sick again. So started another observation period of 5 mils every 5 mins and the Dr finally discharged him as she didn't see any signs of anything sinister and felt he was OK hydration wise.

Since he has been home he hasn't been sick and has been for a pee (even managed to get a sample as they haven't ruled out a urine infection). I just hope he's on the mend now.

Thank you all for comments.

Actually that's reassuring slibogger, that even if the fluids only stay down for 5 mins then they are still getting some benefits.

Poor little man (and poor you, too). Give him a facecloth dipped in boiled water to suck in between the rehydration doses. That will give him a constant dribble of water, without it being enough to trigger his stomach to reject it.

MrsSpoon · 10/06/2007 12:29

Thanks PC that's a good tip, he seems loads better today, has had some toast and is sipping the rehydrate. He is sitting up and although still quiet it's a huge improvement on yesterday when he spent most of the day lying slumped.

Pleased to hear he's on the mend MrsS, how scary for you all. Hope he continues to improve in leaps and bounds.

MrsSpoon · 10/06/2007 12:44

Thanks HM.

Sorry, just realised this thread was yours, I'm a bit of a dufus!

Glad he's a bit better anyway.
