Can anybody help me with this? Medicine question...

Hi. My daughter has a cough AND a bit of a temperature. I usually rely on medised for this kind of thing but the bottle does not mention it dealing with coughs. Would it be ok to give her cough medicine AND a medicine for her temp? As I am not sure I feel like I have to choose whether to treat her cough or her temp....when she has both.

Does anybody know what I can do?

Thanks

P.S She is 3 in August

you need to check whether the cough medicine has paracetomol in

I thikn i would ring local pharmacy for advice in this instance tbh

Furball · 09/06/2007 08:40

I would give medised and a spoon of honey for the cough

HonorMatopoeia · 09/06/2007 08:40

Agree with Popsycal, I'm almost certain I've given dd medised and tixylix together but it does depend on the paracetamol content, check to be sure. Hope she feels better soon

Furball · 09/06/2007 08:41

Hi honor

HonorMatopoeia · 09/06/2007 08:42

Hi Furball!

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 08:43

Thanks for your response popsycal. No it does not contain paracetomol...so i think it would be ok. But I will ask...when you say local pharmacy do you mean the local high street chemist? Sorry if that sounds stupid but I just want to be sure. She is rarely ill (touch wood) so I just want to certain I am doin the right thing.

Yes,chemist would tell you Tiasmummy

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 08:45

Hi Furball. Does honey really work then? I have heard of it but was never quite sure if it was a myth! lol! Just realised my daughter has never actually had honey before!

Thank you honor. I will do that as soon as they open.

You could call NHS Direct but as it's nearly opening time, I'd go and have a word with the pharmacist at the local chemist. Not one of the counter staff (although if you ask one of them I'm pretty sure they'll redirect you to the pharmacist anyway). Hope she's feeling better soon.

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 09:10

Thank you tripot :-) And everybody else that responded. I just rang boots and spoke to the pharmacist who said it was fine to give both as long as the cough medicine has no paracetomol. You were right popsycal and honor :-)

Thanks again.

Bear in mind that you don't actually have to give anything to reduce a temperature unless she's really poorly - her body will do that once it's sorted out the infection! If she's just a bit hot, then cool drinks and light clothes might be all she needs. And also, a lot of people think that it's not a good idea to give cough medicine especially during the day (night time's different if it's keeping them awake) because it just supresses the coughing rather than actually curing it, if you see what I mean. Try warm water with honey and a squeeze of lemon juice, and a cool flannel for her forehead.
Of course this only relates to mild illnesses - really high temperatures and serious coughs are a completely different matter.

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 09:22

Hi Kate. I know what you mean about letting the body fight for itself...but I get so worried when she feels so hot and I sprint for the medised! I know this may not be 100% the right thing to do but it always seems to work really well for her.

The cough medicine I have for her has something called guaifenesin in it which is a exporant so makes her cough a bit more to begin with as it loosens the stuff on her chest instead of surpressing it.

When I go shopping I will def buy some honey as it seems quite a popular rememdy :-)

Thanks :-)

Oh, I'm sorry, Tiasmummy - I was obviously teaching my granny to suck eggs! It's just that some people (not you, obviously!) don't know that a temperature is just a sign that the body's defences are working.I get really cross with the advertisers that play on our concerns and sell us medicines that children don't always need. Ignore me, I'm an aging hippy who'd rather boil up dandelions under a full moon! I hope's your dd's better soon - it's awful when they're ill isn't it? Ice lollies are good medicine too.........!

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 09:40

:-) Nothing to be sorry for at all kate! I appreciate your advice. I probably rely on medicines a bit too much anyway. My gran is always giving traditional carribbean remedies for ailments but I NEED a bottle of something to feel sure it will work! lol! Thats not very good is it!

Thanks again :-)

Tiasmummy - sorry went off and did my ironing!

Yes I always find a spoonful of honey does wonders for a cough and added bonus my ds is always very keen to take it.

There is a rumour that actual cough mixtures are a waste of money anyway as they don't really work.

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 09:59

Very keen to try honey now furball! I dont have to buy a partiular kind do I? Just the standard clear runny one?

OP posts:
Furball · 09/06/2007 10:01

That'll be fine - though next time you're out try getting manuka honey.

Furball · 09/06/2007 10:03

and try and give it to her a 1/3 of a teaspoon at a time for 3 go's so she doesn't wolf down 1 whole teaspoonful

Tiasmummy · 09/06/2007 12:02

Will do :-) Thanks.
