Pain killers for arthritis

Bumbledop · 12/09/2018 17:33

Hi

I have arthritis in my hips. At the moment the pain is at it’s worse when I lay down, so sleeping has become very difficult. Last night I think I managed about half an hour.

The doctor has prescribed co-codamol tablets 30/500, but they are making no difference at all at night. I’m so tired, tearful and grumpy!!

I have tried everything that I can get over the counter, am using a tens machine!

I’m going to have to speak to my dr again, can anybody suggest any other pain killer that I can take. I’m on SSRIs, I’m not sure if that makes a difference.

I have an appointment in two weeks at orthopaedics, but I. Puns do with some sleep between now and then 😆

Thank you

I have a muscle condition in my hip which was misdiagnosed as arthritis and I have amytriptilyn

goose1964 · 12/09/2018 21:20

Amitriptyline which is an anti depressant but works on pain too and it makes you drowsy. Fab stuff

I'm not a medic, clearly. But it could be that some of the pain you're suffering from could come from inflammation. In which case, try taking some aspirin as well. You can take this alongside cocodamol:

Taking co-codamol with other painkillers
It's safe to take co-codamol with ibuprofen and aspirin.
Don't take co-codamol with paracetamol, or other medicines that contain paracetamol. Co-codamol already contains paracetamol so you could be at risk of paracetamol overdose. Medicines that have paracetamol in them include painkillers like Tramacet and Co-Dydramol, migraine remedies and some cough and cold remedies (Lemsip and Night Nurse).

I could have written your post as mine is stoping me sleeping and everyone is noticing I walk with a limp all the time now.

I get a bit of relief from 1000mg of Paracetamol taken with a Naproxen tablet just before bed. It's enough to take the edge off it and if I do wake I can sleep sitting up in bed and still feel OK. I too had co-codamol prescribed but it never worked and I just felt strange so I went back to the naproxen combination.

I'm trying to hold off having a hip replacement for as long as possible as it's very early for my age and it would likely be one of 2/3 over the rest of my life so I tend to try to put up with the pain but I feel I may have to give in soon.

Have you looked at using cbd oil ?

SugarandVinegar · 12/09/2018 21:35

Try the supplement serrapetase op. I take it for arthritic knees, it's the only thing that relives the pain enough for me to get some sleep.

There's some research info on pubmed if required. www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=serrapetase+for+arthritis&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

SugarandVinegar · 12/09/2018 21:42

*Serrapeptase even.

coldrain2018 · 12/09/2018 21:44

I find a hot water bottle very helpful

Bumbledop · 13/09/2018 01:49

Thank you everyone. Has anyone used the cbd oil with any success? I’ve just been researching it. Right now I would try anything.

Slalomsuki I’m in the same boat. At 45 I’m considered too young for a hip replacement as this would loners replacing. But I don’t think I can manage with the pain anymore. I’ve had hardly any sleep for weeks

Ask for some naproxen if you can take it.

Bumbledop · 13/09/2018 03:37

Hi Penisbeakers. I’ve tried it, it didn’t help, I’m starting to worry that nothing can touch this pain Sad

It's horrible I know - my mum has arthritis and she can't take ANY anti inflammatories!

penisbeakers · 13/09/2018 03:45

I dunno if this has already been suggested or you've tried it - but Voltarol painkiller gel has been helpful for me at times with my fibromyalgia. It's diclofenac.

fairiesandelves · 13/09/2018 12:41

My husband resorted to cbd oil with his hip last year. Had a acute osteoarthritis and couldn't walk at all. Naproxen didn't touch the pain. But used cbd oil and very good results for him. Came off all painkillers and new hip op as advised by consultant not needed. Source it carefully OP - Holland and Barrett sell it but not high strength enough. We got it from cannawell . Co . UK. Excellent help line to advise you on the dose and strength required. Hope t works for you

Bechetdiagnosed · 13/09/2018 21:55

I had a hip replacement last year aged 39. It was life changing. I have no pain whatsoever and can live my life to the full.

If you look after your hip replacement it can last 20 years.

Hope the pain improves soon and you get some sleep.

Radiator23 · 13/09/2018 23:03

I have just had the diagnosis and not been told much about treatments, but will look into the suggestions on this thread. I am also having trouble sleeping Sad so you have my sympathy

Bumbledop · 14/09/2018 00:15

Berchetdiagnosed it’s great to hear how successful your hip replacement was, thank you.

Radioator23, I hope you manage to get your pain under control soon.

I needed a replacement at 19. I hung on for 20 years!

A life without pain is great Smile

Good luck Flowers

slalomsuki · 14/09/2018 20:20

I don't think I can hang on for 20 years. It's 3 so far and that's more than enough. Some days are better than others but it's more bad than good at the moment. I could cope if I could put my sock on or cut my toe nails myself but that's gone over the summer and it makes me feel so limited.

I did have a steroid injection in my hip a couple of years back but that was no use at all and didn't relieve any pain or movement improvement.
