dd2 had febril convulsion and its been really traumatic

Sorry if I sound nuerotic but it was the most terrifying thing to see as I really thought she was passing away. The vision of it keeps repeating over and over and over. Ive had past history of PTSD and the big thing was one of my lo's passing away. This has really been hard.

This is the background on what happened posted by NBG for me and pasted from PN board :

DD2 had a fit about 2am tuesday morning.
She was rushed to hospital by ambulance and wired up and given oxygen etc.

They've done some tests, so far they have found out she has very bad tonsilitis and ear infection and urine infection I think.
They're still awaiting more tests.

As far as I know they kept her in last night too as her temp was still going up and down and wouldn't settle.

And this on wednesday night ;

Were finally home,it seemed to take hours for her temp to finally come down to normal, despite her being lethargic and sleepy they thought it best to bring her home and keep dosing her alternatively with calpol and nurofen and start penicillin. I feel weve lived in a very strange bubble for 2 days.

My little brave one suffered fibril convulsion brought on by a rapid increase in temperature. Normally caused by infection they still are not sure what it is, but have said most probably tonsillitis and ear infection. Its been a strange and very frightening experience ; with the convulsion , emergency room antics with repeated unsuccessful canuler insertion and then being back in a ward only 1 floor up in the same block were I had dd1 (the place that caused my ptsd). She was very brave , but its made her seem really vulnerable and teeny.

We have to dose her regularly , during the night also and hope she doesnt spike. Ive been told she could fit again , but that it is less common.

I know ruminating wont help , but I keep feeling the need to talk about it over and over. I just want to get passed the anxiety , but its proving really hard and the fact that shes all lolopy and sleepy all the time is upsetting , despite knowing its normal.

can you get them over the counter , not really seen them , mind you not really a big thing here ?

I cant seem to relax at all , feel I need a stiff drink , but try to use meditation and music now, but my minds flitting everywere.

Ive been distracting myself with our garden project, and thats helping a bit, as theres workers here every day and they are really nice guys.

Ugly betty didnt help last night though .

sorry if this is an obvious question melsy, but do you put the medicine in her bottles with her juice/milk? My ds consultant said this is fine the main thing is they take it!
Also remember that in the unlikely event it does happen again, you will never feel as bad as the first time it happened. You go into auto-pilot and know what to do more which is how us with dc with epilepsy cope. I have 4 steps -

  1. Check he is not near anything to hurt himself
  2. Call ambulance
  3. Give him reassurance
  4. Wait and brreeaatthhee deeply. I am a planner tho - it helps me cope in life so as long as my brain knows what to do when my heart is racing, Im ok!

Re the suppositories, they are ridiculously expensive in this country. About £30 for 2 days supply. I had to beg the paediatrician for a prescription as dd wouldn't take medicine. He was really reluctant even with our history of FCs.

melsy · 09/06/2007 19:17

no its ok to ask , yes I do sometmes do it in the bottle and that was how I gave her medised the night of her fit, so I felt awful that she hadnt had enough. They werent sure at hospital that it was the best way , but she fights and spits soo much that loads drips out with the syringe. Tonight Im trying the medicine in the teat trick and see if thats better. Although I can do thst with sticky nurofen , but not her horrid fluo penicillen as its too liquidy.

You know now i'll never ever be blase about a temp ever again. It didnt help the night beofre, dh said I was mental , shouted at me when I said I had to give her medicine at night and that I always think that my girls have tempratures when they dont. Think he must feel bad now .

My yes we havent got together for ages have we. How are you christie? What have you been up to ? Dont see Kayliegh on here much anymore, have you spoken?.

I was doing well ,well what with this and my own surgery last week !!!

I can only imagine what you must see christie , there was a lovely boy with cytstic fibrosis in the ward with us as his feeding tube was blocked, wasnt easy to see him suffering and he was same as age as my dd1. He had this intense knowing look in his eyes though.

Two friends of mine have been through this with their little ones and it sounds absolutely and utterly terrifying. You are not overreacting!

Every time my ds has a temperature I am like a hawk in case it happens to him but I know that if - god forbid - it does I will still be completely bloody useless and a total wreck.

Talk it over. It is awful. And at least you are describing it to us as febrile convulsion so we know what it is; my friend in Sweden told me "ds had a fever cramp and stopped breathing" and I was like "WTF? What was wrong with him?" "I told you FEVER CRAMP!!!" eventually she had to look it up to discover it was febrile convulsion. Or posh name for fever cramp.

melsy · 10/06/2007 21:53

Just to fray my nervs raw raw raw , NOW dd1 (3.9yrs) has had a temp since 3;30 this afternoon. Thankfully wth calpol and nurofen , a fan and flannel its gone down , but OHHH MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY, please make it all stop. Poor kids , theres some right nasty viruses right now.

Best of luck - it'll probably be fine but I'm sure you're in for a very anxious night

LadyOfTheFlowers · 10/06/2007 22:03

i know exactly how you feel.
the vision keeps replaying in your mind.

in april, ds1 was very poorly and kept getting these temperatures and was whiney all the time etc...

anyway, i knew he was ill and kept taking him to the doc who litterally told me i was neurotic as i am 23 and there was nothing wrong with him.

a monthlater he was still ill and one day he had two of these convulsions. i rang 999 not knowing what it was and the paramedice were very concerned as his lips went blue aswell.

to cut a long story short, the paramedics took us in and insisted he was admitted until it was discovered what was wrong with him as he had been ill for so long.

as it was his first lot of convulsions he was admitted to err on the side of caution and he had a water infection (when we were admitted we were told they thought he had phenumonia (sp?) ) which had caused scarring to his kidneys as it was left untreated.

anyway, the convulsions went on in hsp and they were not concerned tbh.
they told me once he was allowed home, after intraveneous antibiotics, if they continued to just sponge him and fan him to bring the temp down and keep alternating the ibuprofen and paracetamol like they told you.

if she is all sleepy and dazed just let her sleep. her body is fighting and needs to rest to keep the good work up.
i found i could hold ds in just his nappy without making him too hot and this made both of us feel better.

i hope your babe is better soon and i guess i have unloaded my experience too. it is not very nice but if you keep up the medicine she shouldnt have another.

ahh ladyoflowers u must have been beside yourself. I had a peek at your profile to , you are most beautiful. I love the film starlet shot , my little sister does hair and make up for photo shoots like that.

Christie , I think my gel nails will ping off any sec now !!! my yerr dd1 seems soo grown up now , but shes still soo little and yet she talks like an older child , its soo strange and great all together !

It always goes like this doesnt it , one gets better, well nearly, rash is still there on my little baby and she looks wasted and very wobbly when crawling , and then the other goes yucky.

Geez Melsy just seen this, searched your name after you mentioned about your dd2 on the spirit children thread. How frightening for you.

dd had an ear infection recently and a friend recommended high doses of Vitamin C and garlic tablets. Also I have used Hopi Ear candles (you can buy ones shaped at the ends which are good for children).

Hope you are doing better, thinking of you and your wee family

melsy · 14/06/2007 21:05

aww hun helloo , have been thnking of you loads , keep seeing you walking in your orchard. Hope you are doing really well ?

Good tip on the vit c and garlic , will the high dose vit c upset tummy in a little one? May be get her eating papaya , as she loves mango and theres double vit c in papaya than oranges. I'll have increase my garlic in cooking a tad more, she loves garlic covered french beans!

OP posts:
Papillon · 15/06/2007 03:43

I like garlic beans too... mmmm
You can get buffered Vitamin C that helps prevent stomach upset. I only give increased levels for a short period of time.

Garlic I give in capsule form, dd calls them honey bees and seems quite happy with the taste!

We are all doing very well, it was a very good decision to come back to NZ

crazylazydaisy · 18/06/2007 10:26

How is LO now melsy?

melsy · 18/06/2007 19:35

ahh didnt see you come on here crazy, thankyou for asking . She was fine for the week and no sooner had dh been ill, after (dd1 had been!!) , then this lo has started getting temperatures again, she had one during the night last night(dh had to talk to me very firmly as I started panicking as she nearly spiked, depsite dosing her a bed time),but has been ok today, the last 48hrs or so shes been grizzly and very unsettled.

Ive given her some nurofen for bed as shes just been crying and crying all afternoon. Shes also gone from having 20+ oz day to only about 11oz ??? A friend reminded me that may be she has come bigger teeth coming , but teething doesnt normally cause a temp, its normally a secondary issue ?? Im just going to monitor her and if she doesnt improve ill get her checked out.

Ive been miserable today .

OP posts:
crazylazydaisy · 19/06/2007 12:49

Poor old you it's miserable sometimes isnt it. Hope you feel better today. Remember to talk about it as much as you need - even going to the doc if neccesary, it's still a shock to the system what you all went through and they will understand.
Hugs to you all
