DS is being referred to a speech therapist for his stammer. What can I expect?

He was 3 in March and started to stammer approx 6 months ago (I think!). He doesn't do it every time he speaks and when he's excited it gets worse. DH took him to the HV on Tuesday and she said she's going to refer him to a speech therapist. I'm just wondering what to expect really

Ds has salt for pronunciation. Referral took about 4mths to come through then everytime we go he has some pictures to look at and describe them. SALT writes down the words as they are said and then we have a chat when they are finished about issues and she sends out exercises and games to help with the problem.

we waited quite while to be seen and then had group sessions which was interesting............my dd was to shy to speak for the first 4 sessions meanwhile some of the others caused mayhem.......

My ds developed a stammer also just before he was 3, literally started overnight and was particularly bad at the start of every sentance....no idea why tho I was told that it is more common in boys than girls and can occur when their brains are working so fast to get all their ideas out that their speech cant keep up....dont know if that is true or not?

Anyway we had weekly sessions 1-1 with SALT, started off by identifying which words were most difficult and then practising saying one word, and then over the weeks moving up to 2 word phrases etc, very fun sessions, ds enjoyed them. Did regular exercises at home also to emphasise what we did with the SALT. Once the stammer was sorted out we then did further work on some other sounds that were not correct eg couldn;t pronounce 'c' sound, 's' was indistinct.

We did get warned it may come back at times of stress ie when starting school but we have had no reoccurance, he is now 7
Hope it all goes well

Cargirl DS has just been told at his last session he will have a group place over the summer. Not sure how I feel about it as he can be quite shy aswell. However he will also be continuing with his 1-1 every 3mths.

How did the group dynamics work?

My DS started to stammer at about 4 years old, didn't know why but it was quite bad. He annoued himself with it and got frustrated. The best advice we were given at the speech therapy was to get down to his level everytime he spoke to you or you to him, don't start or finish his sentences even though he's struggling, and listen for as long as it takes for him to tell you what he wants to say. I also told all our close friends and family what they had to do to help. I would say by the end of 6 months he was back to normal and he has been fine ever since.

Agree with susue on advice about not finishing their sentances etc.
And like Celia2, it was the Lidcombe system that we were following also
