How do I clean house after D&V

Fiera · 09/09/2018 10:25

I'm sorry if it seems like a stupid question, Can someone please tell me how to clean my house. My children have all had D&V over the last 3 days, today they seem much better and I have no idea how to clean up or what products to use.
Someone said disinfectant on all touchable surfaces but my sister has said disinfectant does kill certain viruses including norovirus?

Do I need to add disinfectant to the bedding/towel wash?

I really have no idea what I'm doing and appreciate any advice

Don’t forget the lightswitches, door knobs, tv remote

Dettol should do it.

Also, change your toothbrushes.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/09/2018 10:29

I would iron the bedding and wash the towels on high temp.

Heratnumber7 · 09/09/2018 10:46

Bloody he'll Chardonnay! That's a bit over the top isn't it?

I know I'm very fairly relaxed about hygiene, but we wouldn't bother with any of that. There are bugs wherever you go.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/09/2018 10:50

I’m not like this usually! Honest.
I hate cleaning.

But this is where the germs lurk. Kill them I say!

SilkeOvesen · 09/09/2018 10:50

I’d have thought that once you’d all had and fought off the virus, it was no longer a danger to you? And germs can’t live for long on surfaces so will not be of danger to guests once you’ve all recovered.

I’d certainly give the loo a good scrub and change all the sheets (nasty and sweaty after being ill) but the rest will take care of itself. Obviously you should be cleaning light switches etc every now and then anyway but they’re not going to reinfect you or get visitors ill.

QuestionableMouse · 09/09/2018 10:51

NHS advice is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water. A good wipe down of surfaces using soapy liquid, bleach in the loo/sinks and washing bedding/towels/clothing on a hot wash should be okay.

MrsJackman10 · 09/09/2018 10:54

I would wash everything on a high temperature, bleach and scrub sinks and toilets, and then use disinfectant on door knobs, phones, light switches etc. I would also replace toothbrushes just because it's nicer, and I always like a good clean up after illness because it makes everything felt better.

Fiera · 09/09/2018 10:54

I thought so too SilkeOvesen, but apparently norovirus can live up to 12 days on surfaces and i'd feel better knowing I've done whatever it takes to get it out of the house. Its pushed my anxiety through the roof

Hot wash bedding and towels, night clothes pants etc. Flash bleach surfaces, loos, door handles.

SilkeOvesen · 09/09/2018 10:57

Interesting! Well yes you definitely don’t want to get anyone else sick! 12 days Shock

I’m not a disinfectant fan but norovirus is nasty so if that’s what it takes....

redsummershoes · 09/09/2018 10:58

d&v bugs get killed with bleach or hight temperatures.
look at the bleach bottle for instructions on how to dilute for cleaning surfaces (including phone, tablet, tv remote).
wash towels and bedding hot (at least 60, boilwash if the fabric can take it)

for normal cleaning warm soapy water works the best.

Itchytights · 09/09/2018 11:00

Of course you should wash bedding on a really high temp.

Goes without saying.

Oh and please please please ensure 48 hours since last episode before returning your Children to School or Nursery.

It isn’t fair on anyone amd is incredibly selfish amd ignorant; some children are immune compromised and could become very very unwell as a result of catching your child’s germs.

Not to mention starting an outbreak in the School or Nursery setting which is totally not acceptable.

Heratnumber7 · 09/09/2018 11:06

How do you know it was norovirus though?

Itchytights · 09/09/2018 11:09

It sounds pretty contagious if all of your children have had it.

Clean clean clean

Bleach kills not disinfectant.

Clean everything and thoroughly.

redsummershoes · 09/09/2018 11:13

How do you know it was norovirus though?

you wouldn't unless tested.
but doesn't matter as treatment and cleaning after are the same...

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/09/2018 11:16

Dettol is bleach based, right?

Or have I been wrong about this all my cleaning life?

SuckOnTHATRyan · 09/09/2018 11:28

I managed to not give what we think was norovirus to the rest of my family by pretty much quarantining myself and then cleaning everything with bleach. I bleached the fuck out of the scene of the crime (bathroom). I bleached every surface. Then I bleached everything I could have touched. I went around with a bowl with water and bleach in it and wiped all door handles, light switches, I even soaked my house keys and credit cards (which somehow still work and didn’t even change colour). I also washed all bedding and towels at 90 degrees. Yes, it does sound a bit ott, but not one other person in my house got it, despite my brother (who I caught it from) passing it to his wife, both his dcs, our granny, our cousin and her two children! My (doctor) dad couldn’t believe I’d managed to contain it as it was so infectious. Obviously, it could be luck, but even my 2yo didn’t catch it and she licked everything at that age and didn’t have the protection of an adult immune system, so you’d think she would have been quite vulnerable to catching it.

I wouldn’t have been so ott but it was an absolutely horrible virus. I wouldn’t have wished it on my worst enemy!

SilkeOvesen · 09/09/2018 17:48

Chardonnay, Dettol is disinfectant.

I googled it to be sure and it says "unique non-bleach formula" Smile

Nutkins24 · 09/09/2018 17:55

Me and dd had d&v virus earlier this year and We just got detol wipes and wiped down door handles, taps, loo flusher, light pulls in loos. Very careful about hand washing for the following week. Hot washed bedding but didn’t add disinfectant. The 2 other people in the house didn’t get it despite having been in fairly close contact. Your kids won’t get it again if it’s viral but obviously you’ll want to avoid it if you can.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 09/09/2018 18:01

Thanks.

There I was thinking it was bleach based. Should have read the level, I suppose....

JKCR2017 · 09/09/2018 18:58

I’ve always been led to believe only bleach will kill norovirus so bleach is ideal for toilets, sinks, baths, the floor. Even wiping bin lids etc. Bleach should be used with cold water. It becomes ineffective in hot water. For the items you cannot bleach disenfectant is better than nothing.

I often add a tad of Zoflora to the bedding, cushions etc etc wash after a bug has hit.

Wipe remote controls, phones, keyboards, and the computer mouse with an antibacterial wipe.

Dettol wont kill norovirus but it’s certaiky better than nothing.

Hand washing is sooo important too. Good hygiene is the key.

By doing this I usually avoid the bug and my OH has never caught it from the kids.

WakeUpFromYourDreamAndScream · 09/09/2018 19:04

Bleach. EVERYTHING

Dettol spray, disinfectants, even the holy Zoflora won't kill it. You need bleach.
