Any doctors around? midazolam

I had a procedure today which I was 'sedated' with midazolam. Only it had no effect on me.
It was therefore agony and I don't want to be in that position again. What can I do about it, re putting it on my notes?
(I also don't metabolise Codeine apparently)

Midazolam has no painkilling properties - it's purely sedative so it won't make a painful procedure painless. When the dose is right though it makes you care less about what's going on and you may forget what's been happening. Some people need more than others so if the dose they gave you today wasn't enough to make the procedure bearable then you simply may need more of it if you were to have a procedure requiring sedation again. The safest thing to do though is still start with a low dose and build up gradually titrating the final dose to effect so that you don't end up in the dangerous situation of being oversedated (ie unconscious and not breathing properly). There is no metabolism issue with midazolam in the same way that there can be with codeine so the fact you've not benefitted from codeine in the past doesn't have anything to do with the difficult time you've had today. Hope that helps.

I had 6 ampules which did nothing, so I had another two, also did nothing-wide awake.
I know it's not a pain killer but was 'sold' as a way to not make me care.
It doesn't seem to work on me

What total dose did you take?

Arriettyborrower · 05/09/2018 07:07

Do you have Ehler-Danlos or hypermobility?

fuzzyfozzy · 05/09/2018 08:17

I don't know more about the dose than the ampules, they had to ring my consultant to get the last two authorised.
Yes I've got hyper Mobility?..

I also found Midazolam had no effect on me when I had a colonoscopy. It was horrendous. I was totally wide awake and remember everything.

I have fibro.

Totally anecdotal, haven’t seen if there is research supporting this, but in my experience people with EDS/hypermobility respond differently to midazolam, usually requiring higher doses or having v little effect at all.

Interesting arriety
I'm going to go to the gp I think to ask what I should do re putting this on my records and what else might be implicated.
