Eating fatty/greasy foods after gallbladder removal surgery

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 02/09/2018 09:01

My gallbladder needs to come out. Been procrastinating for a while because Im terrified and a MASSIVE wuss, but the time has come.

Reading threads on here about the surgery, I notice a lot of people say after the op they are ok and can eat what they want within reason, but get diarrhoea/pains if they eat something fatty.

For those people, can I ask by fatty do you mean a full on fry up/dominoes pizza etc or just say a bacon sandwich or chocolate bar? I'm trying to get an idea of how much I'll be restricted afterwards!

I don't eat really greasy stuff e.g. fry up anyway, but do enjoy chocolate and a bacon butty lol

Thanks so much!

The only change I have noticed since having my gall bladder out last year is that I no longer get attacks of pain and nausea. I eat the same as I did before hand and have zero ill effects.

I had never had an op before so I was really nervous but because I was near the top of the waiting list (I had a date for a month's time) I had a call from the hospital with a cancellation the next day and it was a breeze.

I think everyone is different but for me back sandwich, chocolate bars, crisps all now fine individually (yay!) but pushing it if I have eg dough balls+garlic butter followed by pepperoni pizza and ice cream.

milkjetmum · 02/09/2018 09:08

Fish and chips was also fine, but wouldnt then have dessert too ifswim. Good luck for your op, was soooo glad when mine was done. First week was pretty rubbish afterwards but from then it was just the stitches and bruising slowing me down slightly. Can't tell you how much I enjoyed my first post op cheese on toast!

BigFatCurlyHeadedFuck · 02/09/2018 09:09

I had mine out 12 years ago and have none of the pain. I do, however, find that if I don't eat for a while, and then have something to eat (anything at all) I urgently need the toilet and quite an upset stomach. The trick for me is to graze throughout the day to avoid this happening, and hope for the best in the mornings.

Chaosandmadness · 02/09/2018 09:17

Had mine out a year ago and can now eat anything will no problems at all. I occasionally get a slight burning sensation where my gallbladder used to be but it lasts seconds and I never get an upset stomach or anything else (I have however put on half a stone as I shove as much fatty food in my gob as possible)

SinkGirl · 02/09/2018 09:25

Hasn’t affected what I can eat at all, but then foods never caused me an issue when I had my gallbladder either. Thanks

SinkGirl · 02/09/2018 09:25

Sorry, random phone button press added the “thanks” 😂

Thanks so much for all your replies, it's given me a good idea of what may cause a problem.
I eat pretty moderately most of the time, but I like the odd McDonald's, roast dinner and eat chocolate most days Smile

I had my gallbladder out years ago, as I had a lot of stones and terrible pain. I've found that anything with cream makes me have to rush to the toilet within 30 minutes of eating it. Cream, ice cream, even soup which had cream in it. Also, yoghurt and eggs.

UserThenLotsOfNumbers · 03/09/2018 18:35

Oh no Lynnethecat, sounds like a dairy intolerance?

I had my gallbladder out 4 months ago, I can eat anything at all with no repercussions.
The only change I've had is I'm no longer in pain!

VimFuego101 · 03/09/2018 20:44

I have never had an issue with fatty food since my gb was removed.

Lynne1Cat · 03/09/2018 21:29

UserThenLotsOfNumbers... no, I doubt it as I'm fine with milk and butter

Jeippinghmip · 03/09/2018 21:33

I’ve had mine out and I eat whatever I want, including a fry up, fish and chips and chocolate.

ManicStreetTeacher · 03/09/2018 21:36

After the first few weeks post-surgery, the only thing that gives me a dodgy tummy is any type of pork.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 03/09/2018 21:41

DH struggles now with roast chicken and cream
