Eating for gut health - improving microbiome

Really interested in this subject, and have been trying to put together a healthy eating list.

I already make kefir and drink that each morning. Also eat live yoghurt and am looking into making fermented veg (really don't like the taste of saurkraut but hoping other veg will taste better).

I realise you also need to eat plenty of fibre, so am upping that too.

Any other suggestions? I'm also trying to lose weight, so don't want to go over board on sugar. Thanks.

Anything fermented works well. You can make your own sauerkraut which tastes much much nicer than jarred stuff, it's just salt and cabbage, really easy. Also kombucha is good for gut health, kimchi, miso (fresh not packet stuff, and make it with boiled water that's been left to cool a bit otherwise it kills everything good).

What is it supposed to do?
I have IBS and I like some of the foods mentioned bit I'm honestly not sure why I should be eating themConfused

Blue cheese and Brie/Camembert. The mould is, well, mould.

Apple cider vinegar, if it's raw.

Use the kefir to make kefir cheese.

I got this out the library a while back and remember it having some good recipes and food ideas in - www.amazon.co.uk/Good-Gut-Taking-Control-Weight/dp/0593074297?tag=mumsnetforum-21

Wide variety of veg. Apparently, leeks are good!

I'm trying to eat more beans.

I'd be interested to hear other people's recipes for bone broth. My grandma used to make it, so I love the taste. It's also strangely pleasing to concoct it (possibly channelling my grandma).

This is good.

Miso is fermented.

Try adding Apple before you ferment the home made sauerkraut.

Symprove - google it - every morning before you eat anything else.

It's great. Has helped me lose weight (hand to intended to but was quite happy to drop a few pounds!) and kept me from catching any bugs all of last winter.

A nutritionist put me onto it and I was hugely sceptical but felt so good on it I am now a subscriber.

I think variety is really important as well as just 1 or 2 ‘good’ foods. So yes to cultured stuff but also a variety of vegetables, fish, grains, etc. I read Michael Mosley’s Gut book a while ago which was very interesting. Forgotten the name now though...
