What happens if you eat gluten after going gluten-free?

I'm trialling a gluten-free diet to see if it helps with my thyroid, and am feeling much better since I started. I have been invited to a 40th afternoon tea party. I can take my own gluten-free stuff along, but was just wondering what could happen if I had a day off and treated myself to some sandwiches, scones and cakes? It's an hour and a half away on the train so I don't want to end up making myself ill!

i dont know anything about going gluten free for thyroid problems. what is the science behind it?

i have coeliac disease, so if i ate gluten i would be very ill. im sure if you have no issues with gluten digestion/consumption then you would be perfectly fine.

I went gluten free for thyroid and it hugely reduced my antibodies. Even my sceptical GP was converted. Theory is that the body sees the gluten as something to attack. Not sure, I just know I feel better and haven't gone back in 4 years.

If I accidentally eat gluten my thyroid symptoms come in force - the exhaustion, migraines and delightful swelling Hmm

I'm not allergic to it, just sensitive.

If I've not had gluten for at least a week I can usually get away with just a bloated stomach.

The worst outcome is blaoting, trapped wind pain (can be horrible), vile indigestion, headache, nausea, constipation.

Shits I get the shits like you wouldn't believe although sometimes I get away with it

Can you maybe do a day in the house the day after to see what happens?

Hypothyroid as well, I have been gluten free for five years now. I feel utterly exhausted and have joint pains to the point I can hardly climb the stairs if I have gluten. I really wouldn’t have it if I were you.

My daughter has been gluten free for about 6 months now.
Recently when in Spain we went for a meal, checked with the waiter that it was gluten free and she ate it. An hour later she started being sick and had awful stomach cramps and a headache the next day.
We went back to the same restaurant a few days later and asked about the dish she had eaten and the (different) waiter said it was not gluten free and she shouldn’t have it.
We complained to the manager and he offered us ameal including drinks free of charge, we decided not to stay though. Luckily it was only a gluten intolerance, if it had been a nut/ dairy allergy it could have killed her!!

I was strictly gf for a year for the same reason (doctor suggested I try it for high thyroid antibodies). It didn't affect my antibodies and when I stopped I had no reaction whatsoever.

Ok. I really don't want to risk shitting myself so far away from home for the sake of being a glutton for an afternoon! Maybe I'll take along a home-made gluten-free cake. It's all a bit new to me and I just didn't want to be a pain with my 'dietary requirements'.

Good to know it helped with your hypothyroid side effects.

Thank you.

clock & even

thats interesting! i did see a link between coeliac disease & Hashimotos.

maybe best just to bring your own stuff then. Asda/big Sainsburys have great GF cakes, biscuits, bagels, tiger bread etc

esk1mo some people with autoimmune conditions other than CD have an inflammatory reaction when they eat gluten or some ingredients which contain gluten. My friend has RA and did an elimination diet on the recommendation of her (NHS) rheumatologist. She finds that wheat aggravates her joint pain.
