Methotrexate

Does anyone have any experience of taking this drug? I've just been prescribed it for pretty awful eczema.
And no. Aveeno and oats in the bath won't cut it. This is an alternative to using both high dose oral steroids and seriously strong steroid cream (even on my face.)
Hoping for good things but also rather worried about possible side effects.

I've been on it for almost ten years now. My only side affects have been that the tablets made me very sleepy so I take it via injection now.

I hope that won't happen. I need to be able to drive! eek.

Ps I take it for psoriatic arthritis, it helped my skin but did wonders for my joints.

Take it in the evenings to start with then to make sure. I normally do mine at night as even via injection I still get the best nights sleep of the week Grin

I have taken it , I’m in remission at the moment but took it via injection. Was fine

Fab advice thanks. I have been told to take folic acid the day before and after. Picked up prescription today so would take the methotrexate Friday. Lie in Saturday?
I'm so fed up of itching and burning and bleeding. Sad
The advice leaflet says don't drink but dermatologist seemed more relaxed than that. What advice did you have?

Jojo x post. Good news. I'm so glad you're doing well.

I don’t drink much anyway, but certainly not teetotal. I was told if going to a function and drinking move the day I took the injection. I used to take folic acid as well

My mum had it. Thought it was brilliant, her autoimmune disease responded really well.

No side effects such as drowsiness. Bloods monitoring was a faff but worked really well.

Then she got diarrhoea and it didn't agree with her anymore - she could have gone on to injections but was lucky enough that her disease had resolved enough not to need it anymore.

It's weird. I've had mild eczema since I was a child but now mid 40s and it is on my face and back and legs and sooooo itchy. Bumpy and burny.
Can't be hormonal. I'm on the pill. Also having joint issues too. And foot pain. Feeling pretty broken at the moment.

I never drink alcohol the day before or the day after I take it.

Wolfiefan · 29/08/2018 21:10

Thanks. I'm assuming as it is once a week it stays in the body a while. I'm just hoping it helps.

My Dad had to take this years ago for his arthritis (no longer on it). I asked him to summarise his experience of it.... “There are some scary websites out there about it but stick with the NHS as that’s fairly accurate..
The pills themselves are small but very potent- and they didn’t agree with me at all, my body would react when I tried to swallow my dose, had to take them with a mouthful of peaches... then the rest of the day, I’d have a thumping headache and feel like I had a stomach full of cold lead. Other side effects were a change in sense of smell - gave me a serious aversion to things like perfume and Herbal Essences shampoo that lasts till this day !
In the end, I had to have by injection by the practice nurse but the side effects remained the same...
In the end they took me off it as I couldn’t tolerate it.
That said, everybody’s different, some will have very mild side effects others can’t get on with it and in general, women tolerate it better than men.”
Hope this helps x

My friend was rx it for severe arthritis in her 30's. Within a few months she had developed fibrosis in her lungs. This despite having a chest xray before she started. Seven years on she's oxygen dependent on any exertion, even walking. This on top of her terrible arthritis. I wouldn't touch it.
