It is painful, horrible and not doing much for my relationship either.

I am drinking plenty of water, cranbery juice, Vit C, also going to the loo before and after and using a lubricant.

It is driving me nuts.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!

Try properly washing afterwards, either in a bidet or shower, that always helped me. Going to the loo did naff all.

Also changing position so it is not to...ahem....energetic...can help

It sucks I know, I used to only see DH once every 3 or 4 weeks and used to go home every time with an infection...not fun on a 6 hour train journey!

Condoms!

Tiggiwinkle · 06/06/2007 08:53

Angel kilmartin is a recognised authority on cystitis and has written some good books about this-have a look on Amazon. One of her suggestions is to wash afterwards but just use clear water.

justaphase · 06/06/2007 09:10

We are TTC (haha) so can't use condoms. We have also tried being as gentle as possible.

Will look for that book, thanks.

It is really driving me mad.

How long does it last each time? Just asking because every time I used to see DP (some years ago) I would hurt very badly when weeing, for a few hours afterwards.
Didn't usually get a chance to use lubricant as it was one of those clandestine things and we had to grab our moments!

I found things settled down much more when I had had a baby, think I was just a bit unused to it iyswim...a bit of stretching can be good!!

Hope you find an answer soon, I know it can almost put you off having sex...

justaphase · 06/06/2007 09:26

It attacks usually about 48 hours later.

It completely disappeared during my previous pregnancy (contrary to expectations) but is back with a vengance now.

you could ask your gp if they'd prescribe an antibiotic to keep at home and take a couple of doses after sex.

janinlondon · 06/06/2007 09:33

It is possible to get a low dose continuous antibiotic prescription if you have turned up at the GP evey time. They need to have a really clear record that it is definitely bacterial so you would need to have given samples too. Is it possible that its bruising rather than bacterial? (ie: if DP is particularly well endowed). If so, prophylactic antibiotics would not help.

When I had this problem I read everything and Angela Kilmartin's book was the worst. Way over the top. The penis referred to as a 'broomhandle' throughout.

Good hygeine, avoiding irritants and plenty of lubrication help - I found Durex's Sensilube much better than ky

And it just stops being a problem at some point

justaphase · 06/06/2007 09:43

Dh average and we try to be gentle

Might have to as for ABs although I happen to go to different doctors every time and they tend not to take samples - recently one was my GP, one near work, one on holiday and one out of hours clinic on a weekend

Does not sound like the book I read eemie

hi!
I'm Angela Kilmartin!
I find when writing about sex and cystitis that it helps readers a lot to smile a bit, broomhandle is very explicit but very focussing too and amusing.
I always write in context and broomhandle does not appear all the way in my sexual cystitis book but maybe in two or three spots when required. Tiggiwinkle has it correct, and its all in the reading and the understanding.
The Patient's Encyclopaedia of Cystitis, Sexual Cystitis and Interstitial Cystitis is my current bible on these subjects.
You can view all sorts of other information on my site;
www.angelakilmartin.com
There are books on candida and also mercury poisoning from teeth fillings. And you can get a DVD on cystitis, audio MP3's for quick listening and of course the essential books and booklets. I now have specific booklets for all ages on cystitis starting at babies and ending in care homes.
Great reads and ideas.
Go on, have look.

My sister swears by packets of refreshers or love hearts. Taken (orally ) in one go as soon as there is any sign of cystitis. I'm not normally a sufferer, but I have to say it has worked for me on the odd occasion.

Blandmum · 27/10/2007 21:09

pee as soon as the deed is done. and wash from foint to back with clean water only.

angelaki · 28/10/2007 00:01

Sexual cystitis has many causes;
bacteria roaming and infiltrating is the main one. You can imagine then how this comes about!! His n' her's!! Top n' Tail!!
Imagine!!
No amount of products will do a thing about it but you have to learn how to stop bacterial travelling. Then you have to learn about the effects on the vulva from clothing shower gels, clothing, alcohol, a bookful. As Tiggywinkle says in her message the kilmartin book is full of help but its not the most recent one.
