Hideous hideous back and shoulder pain

Bestseller · 28/08/2018 15:24

It was a couple of weeks ago and started as a cramp like pain towards my lower back but not quite as low as lower back pain iyswim. I was also constipated (very unusual for me) so assumed that it was related to that. I took laxatives which helped neither the constipation or the back pain.

Over the next few days the pain got worse and I felt generally unwell. It culminated in a night of sheer agony with a sharp pains running through my back and into my right shoulder. I've never know pain like it and I've done childbirth twice!

So, I went to the osteopath who usually deals with my sporting injuries. To cut a long story short he did a thorough examination and decided that my back and shoulder were in perfect working order and that this pain was related to my liver. Pressing my abdomen triggered the pain in my shoulder and he could feel my liver below my ribs, which indicated there was some inflammation because usually it would be inside my ribs. Also, my stools, when they eventually appeared, were very pale yellow, which is apparently an indicator of liver issues.

He said I should see GP who would probably do blood tests. I booked next available GP appointment which was in almost 4 weeks' time. I phoned the doctor to see it they could refer me for the blood tests without seeing me. He was very dismissive of the osteopath "they know about bones" and wasn't prepared to listen to anything he'd said. Also wouldn't send me for the blood tests without seeing me.

Anyway, after a few more days the pain eased and whilst I still felt unwell and tired for a while am back to normal now. The doctor's appointment is next week. Should I cancel it? I feel like I should follow it up, but currently have no symptoms and don't really expect to be taken seriously given the telephone conversation, but if it is liver/gallbladder related it could recurr?

No you should still go. Your bloods might still show up something.

I don't think any doctor would be allowed to refer you anywhere on an osteo's say-so. No more than an osteo would plunge in and start treatment without making her/his own diagnosis first.

Aquamarine1029 · 28/08/2018 17:13

Do NOT cancel it. The pain came from somewhere and it sounds almost identical to what I had when my gallbladder was dying. I didn't have any stones, it was literally just failing. I lived with that near constant pain for a year before I was diagnosed. I had it removed and feel better than ever.

I know, I feel like I need to follow it up and osteopath made a point of asking me to let him know how I got on but the gp was so dismissive and I don't have any current symptoms to tell him about

Another here you thinks this sounds exactly like gallbladder issues. Like the PO mine was affecting my liver in the end. These attacks came and went.

Do not cancel! Push for bloods and ultra sound.

CherryChatsworth · 28/08/2018 21:44

Oh that sounds gallbladder. Keep appointment

APermanentlyExhaustedPigeon · 28/08/2018 21:49

Just popping in to re-iterate gallbladder! May show up on bloods, may also be worth asking for an ultrasound scan if it flares up again. Flowers it is bloody painful 😖

I get this too. My bloods have came back clear. The doctors don't know how to help me as it is sporadic. I thought it may be shingles but there have been some really interesting replies here that are worth investigating.

When I had similar pain my GP said that dark wee and pale poo was a classic sign for gallstones. If it has resolved for now though the GP will not be able to do anything and there may be no need to if it was one stone and it has moved through. I would go to the doctor if you still have any symptoms but otherwise just go if it recurs. I'm not sure there'd be any point in taking an appointment now if you are back to normal but I am not medically qualified
