Anyone had mosquito bite reaction like this?

Has anyone had mosquito bites come up like this?
I don’t think they’re infected as there are 12 and they all look exactly the same, surely they can’t all be infected? Got them in Italy and been home a week and they were getting better but have come up like this overnight! Taking piriton but it’s not helping

Hmm, that does look bad. Are any of the red areas warm? I'd be worried about cellulitis. Draw around the red areas and see if the red is spreading.

Can you see the practice nurse at your GP if you can't see the doctor? Or at least a pharmacist?

BiggerBoat1 · 28/08/2018 10:54

Mine always look like this. Sometimes a lot worse! If they feel warm to the touch you may need antibiotics. Otherwise antihistamines and anthisan should do the trick. Not pleasant I know. You have my sympathies.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 28/08/2018 10:54

First I would ask a pharmacist then depending on what they say, maybe walk into A and E. Good idea about drawing round them to see if they get bigger.
In view of how long since you were bitten, and what they look like, I would treat this as a matter of urgency.

ShackUp · 28/08/2018 10:55

I've had monster bites like that before and kept an eye on them in case of infection, but they did go down eventually.

chuckiecheese · 28/08/2018 10:57

I get thus reaction, earlier in the Summer I had two bites on my feet & they swelled up & went bright red (think scalded!). I could barely walk for a couple if days.

I took anti histamine & put in a bite cream. I elevated where possible & they gradually reduced over one week.

I found it takes 2-3 days for the 'effect' to fully come outSad perhaps drawing a line around them to see how far they spread.

My sympathiesThanks

Apologies for typos, fat fingers on phone Grin

SilverHairedCat · 28/08/2018 11:00

If this was the day after the bite I wouldn't think twice.

12 days later is more worrying.

SilverHairedCat · 28/08/2018 11:01

Aaargh, a week later.

Seeline · 28/08/2018 11:03

Both DS and I react like that.

Also we find that if they have been recovering, and then we get bitten again several days later, all the old ones get 'reactivated'.

Keep an eye on them, but I don't think they can all be infected. Antihistamines should help.

Huffle · 28/08/2018 11:03

Thanks, managed to get a doc appointment later on. They do feel very hot and some have got larger but it seems odd that they were going away and now come up like this. I’ve not even been scratching as they were getting better. Will see what they say. Never been bothered by mozzies before, am amazed that they overlooked the succulent toddler thighs of DD2 and decided to attack me!!!

You are allergic to the polypeptides in mozzy spit-it is the gift that keeps giving! Antihistamines, systemic and topical and steroid creams usually clear it.

SilverHairedCat · 28/08/2018 11:07

How much later? If its an infection, it's an urgent appointment you need.... Can you get to a chemist today for a 2nd opinion?

Branleuse · 28/08/2018 11:11

youre allergic

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 28/08/2018 11:13

It's a delayed allergy - I get it. Anti-histamines, elevate, keep an eye out for infection - but if you're worried go to GP.

Aridane · 28/08/2018 11:18

Yes, I get that and OTC anti histamine don’t help much so I have prescription ones from GP.

DeltaG · 28/08/2018 11:36

Yes, the lighter-coloured centres are fluid and are going to turn into blisters.

Taking antihistamines will hopefully my minimise the reaction.

You were probably bitten by the tiger mosquito, which used to only live in the tropics but is now in Southern Europe too.
They are black and white striped.

I have anaphylaxis; as I discovered when I lived in the Philippines 10 years ago and needed emergency medical treatment as I was struggling to breathe. DH's family are from the south of France and it royally pisses me off to take my fucking Epipen to visit the in-laws in summer these days.

DeltaG · 28/08/2018 11:37

Oh and yes, it's an allergic reaction of course!

Lunde · 28/08/2018 11:42

yes - I have had some that looked like that. If you can yet steroid cream over the counter try that.

Dh had an even worse reaction a few times and had to get steroid injections

Fluffychickenmonkey · 28/08/2018 11:49

I have the same problem sometimes and often much worse. Steroid cream and antihistamines work eventually but can take few days to settle down

Roomba · 28/08/2018 11:57

I react like this too. When I was in Samos the other year, all the bites (my ex counted them and gave up at 60, I was COVERED) started weeping a clear, sticky yellowish liquid too - I looked like I had some terrible medieval plague! I saw a doctor there who told me to take antihistamines - he didn't think they were infected but that it was just a massive allergy to the bites. They did go away eventually but it was extremely unpleasant - not sure what type of mozzies they have there!

swingofthings · 28/08/2018 13:27

Ds also reacts like this. If there is one mosquito in the town it will find him! Last night he got bitten 3 times on one finger and its swollen almost twice its size. Same every year nothing helps it goes down on its own after 24h.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 28/08/2018 13:39

Yes, I got similar in bloody Holland at a Dutch Center Parcs this summer. Didn't go prepared like I do in the Med, wasn't expecting it. The worst ones blistered. Antihistamines, steroid cream and just time. Some went dark red like a burn. Went to Thassos (Greek island, known for mozzies) later in the summer, used my extra strong mozzie repellent and a plug in overnight and got bitten twice - by horse flies! Much more painful at the point of bite but I'm obviously not allergic to them as the bites were nasty but mild compared to the mozzie reaction.

I usually get a reaction 2 or 3 days after the bite which then gets worse but starts getting better after a week. Not had as much of a delay as you. So maybe worth getting checked out.

Huffle · 28/08/2018 14:26

Been to the docs and got Fexofenadine and some stronger steroid cream than what I had been using. She said it’s just an allergic reaction. Really hope they don’t blister!!😬😬

Novaphergan cream from Italy 🇮🇹 available in Italy and online. This is the most extraordinary tube of wonder. I buy a few tubes at a time. Recommend to my mum in the eighties and have used for everything sting related. Good luck

AlbertaSimmons · 28/08/2018 15:01

Yes, I get that whenever I get bitten by pretty much anything. I had a really bad reaction to something that bit me in the sand on hols abroad and got cellulitis. Now if I get bitten I take an antihistamine as soon as I can just to try to contain the reaction.
