X Ray results waiting time for possible broken bone?

Hi all,

I had an x Ray done on Friday for a possible broken scaphoid, non urgent as I went to GP rather than A and E and got referred although the radiologist said she’d put it through more urgently for examination as it was a potential injury.
I was just wondering how long you normally have to wait for X Ray results or if they’d ring you straight away if they saw a break even though it’s bank holiday weekend. Does anyone have any experience with minor broken bone x rays and waiting times?

I recently broke a bone in my foot and the radiologist told me there and then that there was a fracture. I was given temporary treatment at a&e and had to go to the fracture clinic a few days later.
Our GP doesn't do minor injuries so I went to a&e, albeit several days after the accident.

I'm wondering this myself. I have a potential stress fracture in my foot and the pain is getting worse. Had an X-ray last Tuesday via a GP referral. The radiologist said they get in touch with the GP within 5-7 days but I want to know if the GP will contact me or I've got to contact them. I've walked on my foot (painfully I might add) for three weeks and want to know if I should be doing anything to help it get better, not make it worse!

Thanks qooz hopefully that means nothings broken!

5-7 days to walk on a potentially broken foot seems ridiculous though really, don’t know why they can’t tell you there and then beansonbread

The radiologist said it only had a chance to briefly examine the X-rays and stress fracture can be quite subtle so need a more in depth look. I think had there been an outright fracture I (and you) would have been told straight away.

Even if there's no bone damage, ligament issues can be just as bad if not worse. I'm almost hoping for a simple fracture rather than anything worse.

Hopefully we both get contacted tomorrow when everything's back after the bank holiday.

It wasn't deliberate, but I walked on a broken ankle for over a month! Admittedly, because although it hurt I was convinced that it was something else because you can't walk on a broken ankle, can you??? But when I was sent for any xray I was told straight away - and put in plaster. It's actually astonishing how resilient bones are, and for a lot of conditions they don't really do anything other than wait for it to heal. Even with my broken ankle, the plaster was only to stop me making it a lot worse (although after a month I'm not sure how!) and they actually did nothing else to it at all!

Scaphoid is an unusual fracture, it will often not show up on an X-ray for a couple of weeks. If a fracture is suspected (pain in a couple of key places) even if the X-ray appears clear then it should be treated as a fracture & re xrayed in a couple of weeks. At that point a fracture can either be confirmed (and treatment continued) or excluded (and splint removed).
OP - can I assumed your GP has put a splint of on your wrist?

Motherofamadhouse · 27/08/2018 22:01

No no splint Peter, hoping that means he suspects it’s soft tissue and just ruling out a fracture then! Honestly the pains not so bad really other than the fact I can’t put weight on my hand at all!

When was the injury?
