Why do I get ill when I can least afford it? Do I have shingles? Will I be very ill?

Have just got a big promtotion at work and need to be there.

Have been feeling funny for a while and then on sunday some spots appeared in my back but I thought they were a heat rash.

They are starting to spread and are really itchy and feel as if the are burning.

I have had chicken pox already and failed to catch it when my husband had it as an adult and when dd had it. I phoned NHS direct and they seem to think it is shingles. I am now very nervous as someone from work had shingles as they were very ill for a long time and I just can't be off work for more than a few days.

I'm not sure I'm afraid, but didn't want you to feel neglected.

shingles rash is not particularl yitchy and usually very , very painful - one patient described it was like lying on broken glass - and unfortunately patients often feel quite poorly but usually only 1-2 weeks at most, itchy burning hot rash - more likely heat rash or allergicy type thing, try some anti-histamine and see if htis helps.

shingles more like a burn feeling imo

If in doubt get to the doctor as if you get aciclovar right at the beginning it is much shorter

ArtichokeTagine · 05/06/2007 16:13

I had shingles aged 16. It did not itch at all. It felt like someone had scalded my skin with boiling water. It looked like lots of tiny blisters. On the bright side I did not feel ill at all and as it was only on my arm I took pain killers and carried with life as normal.

twinsetandpearls · 05/06/2007 16:14

It is a burning feeling.

Am going to the doctord in twenty minutes.

Oh yeah I had Aciclovar. maybe that is why it never got really bad.

good luck at the docs.

I just feel very tired which do quite often so I had ignored it.

Will find out soon what it is .

I am just worried about how much time I will need to have off work and what to do with dd as I don't want her to catch anything.

can't comment on how it makes you feel as I had it when I had glandular fever so was feeling utterly shite anyway

christywhisty · 05/06/2007 16:19

I had shingle on my bottom, only 12 spots, yes they were itchy but I think they got infected and I had a lump in my groin.

Don't remember the spots being particularly painful, but its nearly 20 years later and I can still feel where they were, during pmt.

I did not feel well. I completely lost my appetite and burst into tears at the doctors for not reason at all.

Doctor gave me ABs and something to paint onto them every day.

Just got back and it is not shingles or chicken pox. THe doector looked very confused and just said it was an viral infection and presribed some cream and some antihystamines. Have been signed off work for the rest of the wekk incase i iam contagious as they don't really know whatit is,
