Protuding Belly button

Creole · 05/06/2007 13:38

What do I do with my son's very big belly button? He is beginning to get teased for it. He's 6 now, and I'm really scared of surgery.

How can it go down? I may have to visit the docs again as he wasn't keen to surgery.

Sorry, Creole. Just though I'd bump this for you. It sounds (and I not a medic), that he may have a hernia.

Have you had this checked out as a possibility?

Mumpbump · 05/06/2007 14:19

No idea, I'm afraid, but I agree that surgery is not a good idea unless there is a real need for it...

I read somewhere that it might be an umbilical hernia. Also when we went to see the doc, he just said adopt a wait and see approach for 6 months. He also scared the hell out of me with the mention of surgery and general anesthestic. So I didn't go back after 6 months.

But now he's beinning to get teased I may have to go again.

If it is an umbilical hernia, you should look into surgery. The wife of one of my colleagues recently had this done and she used to have an "attack" once a year when it "popped" where she was in agony and ended up in hospital. Although risky, surgery is still better than years of aggro, imo.

It's worth thinking about if the poor little lad is getting teased, though. It's always very difficult when faced with this sort of dilemma ... we all know it's not the end of the world but by the same token, as mothers we don't like the thought of anyone making fun of our own children.

I know nothing about it, unfortunately, but maybe they do a 'key-hole' type op for this sort of thing?

That's the thing it doesn't hurt him at all, its just there like a small pebble.

My DS (3yrs) has an umbilical hernia. It was huge when he was a baby and got massive when he cried but now is just like a lump of skin sticking out of his belly button. We saw a paed surgeon last year (as he is under a few paeds as he was 3 months prem so nothing gets missed with him!) and she prodded it and said she could easly repair it (under GA) but she wanted to leave him a year. He sees her again on 20 June. She did say repairing it would be mainly for cosmetic reasons and I came away saying I couldn't imagine him getting teased at school for something as daft as a sticky out belly button but DH said he probably would.

From your post it looks like I was wrong and he may well get teased. Hmm, looks like we have a decision to make soon! Don't like the sound of it "popping" mumpbump!
