I've heard that they are what you should be doing to prevent injuries - but I've no idea what they are. Help please!

core stability exercises are those that help strengthen the muscles that lie under your abs (that idealistic flat and toned stomacha area). any further than that, am not sure about -sorry! hth. x fm

Your core is your entire abdominal area and back.

Exercises which stregthen that area built your core.

Basic sit ups and crunchs only do one small area of your core so you are meant to do exercises which make the whole area work.

2nd link has exercises for you to try...FWIW...I do Body Balance (combo od TaiChi, Yogs and Pilates), its based on buildingloads of core strength and its brilliant.

Your core stability muscles are the deep muscles that support your spine.

Your body has 2 types of muscles, those that move a joint (like your biceps) and those that stabilise a joint (or joints as in the case of your spine).

The stability muscles that support your spine (aka Transversus abdominus ..at the front, and multifidus...at the back) lie underneath the spine 'movers' the ones that help you do a sit up.

The stability muscles are rather lazy, so if they can let a mover do their job they will. They are also prone to giving up a bit if you are in pain. So not great if you have back pain, the muscles that should be working hard to support and protect your spine ar ehaving a holiday.

To re strengthen them you ideally need to be shown how to switch them on with someone who knows where they are (such as a physio, or pilates instructor). This sounds a bit mad, but as I say, the movers will tend to take over the job and it's quite difficult to 'see' a core stability muscle at work.

Yes...its run in all sort of places but (i believe) Body Balance is a trademark name so if they call it that it has to be the real deal.

www.lesmills.com/global/en/members/bodybalance/bodybalance-group-fitness-program.aspx

It is wonderful...I did it right up when I popped and I had bounced back into shape afterwards...pity I then went to town on that whole "I'm breastfeeding" thing.
