ive been using optrex refreshing eye drops. doctor has just given me a prescription for cromulux. does anyone know of anything i can do to stop this happening to me.

take an antihistamine (tablet)

tis the only thing that stops mine I'm afraid (I also rub till mine are swollen - really horrid)

cylonbabe · 04/06/2007 21:24

ive been taking hayfever tablets from boots containing loratidine, andafter that my eyes are still in this state. he a;sp said that next year the hayfever would be worse. i'm quite scared.
i spent many years with what i thought was a constant cold, terrible sinus headaches etc. turned out it was somethig called allergic rhinitus. i used to live off dencongestants and paracetamol etc. this was cured, if you can use the word, by sweating lots in the gym, wearing hats to cover my forehead in all weather, and taking vitamins. i wonder if there is any such thing that would work with the itchy eyes?

I would try another antihistamine. Did the doc not give you another?

There are lots of different ones. I find some work and some don't. You may even be able to get a different one in Boots.

foxinsocks · 04/06/2007 21:28

other thing I do is take Flixonase every day (you can get that in Boots too). That should help with your nose.

DrNortherner · 04/06/2007 21:28

The thing with antihistamines are you have to try a few different types before you find the one most suited to you. Zirtek works best for me at the moment and beconase which is a nasal spray and eye drops.

The itchy eye thing is awful I agree. I find a cold damp compress over each eyes soothes them when they are really bad and however itchy do not rub them as you just move the pollen about.

Luffa complex is supposed to be good (herbal remedy) and I have heard taking a spoonful of local honey a day can raise immunity, but I hate honey!

You have my sympathies. I suffer too and it is miserable.

cylonbabe · 04/06/2007 21:29

thanks, will go to boots tomorrow.
its the eyes that are the most irritating tbh. either the nose isnt so bad, or i'm used to it from the previous sinus colds etc.

Wear sun glasses when outdoors at all times and do not drive with windows open or sleep with windows open.

haarpsichordcarrier · 04/06/2007 21:31

have you tried an ioniser?
or a thing called a Goodsphere?

foxinsocks · 04/06/2007 21:31

I would go back to Boots - the hayfever stuff is on special at the moment. Get a different antihistamine and take it before you go to bed (so don't get one that is for the day time) - get Piriton or Zirtek (I think both those are different ot Loratidine). At the same time, get some Flixonase and use it for a week and see whether there's any improvement.

Just check with the pharmacist that you can take that all with the cromulux drops.

cylonbabe · 04/06/2007 21:32

my son mentioned the honey to me as well. sometimes he can be wise beyond his ten years but im hesitant to take it as i am doing really well with my weight loss on atkins and it will really go into the carb content, iyswim.
i will look for the luffa complex, thants northernet. and as soon as off mn, will try cold compress. actually it makes so much sense. should have thought of that myself.

wow, lots of good ideas.
so trip to boots tomorrow morning, and i'll take another tablet in an hour or so.
what is an ioniser and a goodsphere?
i have to drive with car windows open as no airconditioning in car. but i can shut the windows and sleep with fan on?

for some reason, I think that Flixonase works on more than just your nose (iyswim). I imagine it's because all the passages are connected but I may be talking absolute bollocks . Still, anything is worth a try!

I hope you get some relief. Let us know how it goes!

cylonbabe · 04/06/2007 21:46

thansk fox. am off to try the cold compress.
i shut the window in this room after the las tposts. i dont know if its the window, or the cromulux eye drops kicking in, but alr4eady feeling better.
