Been given a within-two-week referral and freaking out

I found a painless lump at the bottom of my armpit late last year. Went straight to GP who did an examination and said it was a harmless cyst and sent me on my merry way. However, to me it has felt bigger and looked more visible under the skin so I went back to the GP who has referred me to the breast clinic and will get an appointment within two weeks as is the NHS system if cancer is suspected.
I'm trying to stay calm but I've got two toddlers and I can't help feeling really scared it's something sinister. I'm also slightly alarmed that if it is something serious, I was dismissed months earlier. I'm trying to stay away from google but from searches pain-less are often the most suspect. Just need to get this out as it's causing anxiety.

It's okay he just has to mark it as that as it's a growing lump. Good luck I'm sure everything will be okay xxx

I had a small painless lump my gp said was a cyst. It did nothing for 2 years then started growing. Instead of phoning the GP for a referral... I phoned because it developed into a giant abscess instead.

Painful but once excised totally nothing. I hope it's the same for you.

Thank you for your responses. I just needed somewhere to get out how I'm feeling. Will try and be rational and keep the worrying within reasonable levels!

OP - I know it's scary but your GP has followed the recommended wait and see approach. There's been a change so you're on the very efficient two week pathway. Remember only 1 in 20 lumps seen at breast clinic are sinister.

Blondie87 · 21/08/2018 13:54

I'm grateful for the efficiency of the NHS, so fortunate to have the ability to be seen by a specialist so quick. I hadn't actually heard that statistic Cressida so that is cheering news! Thank you.

I've had two two week referrals this year - I'm 33 and have a three year old and six month old. Both turned out to be nothing sinister. Friends who are doctors say it's getting more and more common as GPs are so worried about getting sued.

Mrsramsayscat · 22/08/2018 11:13

Blonde, that 1 in 20 statistic is comforting, isn't it?

I was referred for oral cancer last year, but I didn't have it at all. I know the wait is tough. Keep busy with those kids.

Wanted to update in case anyone finds this in a similar situation. I've had the referral appointment and it is a harmless cyst. Relief and thankfulness don't come close to describing how I'm feeling! Thanks to those who gave support when I needed it!

So please everything is ok x

Most trusts operate a system for breast symptoms where everyone gets an appointment within 2 weeks. Hope you get sorted Thanks
