Numb big toes

Why on earth would I have numb (on top) big toes? One more so than the other....I noticed one a few days ago and then checked the other which is also numb. Any ideas?!

I have this in the tips of my big toes and I thibk it was down to a pair of boots I wore a lot through winter. Haven't worn them for months and the toes are slowly getting a bit more feeling so it could be footwear.

That aside how is your general health? Are you diabetic possibly?

chronicallyexhausted · 20/08/2018 17:54

Thank you for replying. I hadn't considered footwear but I will try wearing something different and see if that helps. No I don't think I am diabetic although am undergoing tests for exhaustion at the moment.

The ends of my fingers and toes went numb when I was B12 deficient, could be that?

MintTeaLady · 20/08/2018 17:55

This was the first sign I had that my vitamin B12 levels were low. I ignored it for months (because I naively didn’t place any importance on it) but then other symptoms kicked in. Keep an eye on it!

Can you have a blood test to determine a deficiency for b12? I have a normal ferritin level and other normal blood results

This is weird, I noticed the tip of my big toe was numb a few weeks ago. I keep forgetting about it.

I'll follow this thread to see if you figure it out!

BalancingStick · 20/08/2018 18:26

Me too! No idea what is causing it

ILoveDolly · 20/08/2018 18:29

I used to get a numb toe and was fixed by going to a foot specialist, a podiatrist, who gave me insoles for my shoes that helped me walk better. My first suggestion is to change to good supportive well fitting shoes but also consider mentioning it to the GP if it could be symptomatic of vitamin deficiency as that is also easily sorted. Anyway, just don't ignore Grin

Movablefeast · 20/08/2018 18:32

If it continues it could be something neurological so don't ignore it.

OrangeCarpet · 20/08/2018 18:35

Do you have lower back pain? Look up dermatomes. The nerve that serves the big toe is L5. That means it exits the spine via the 5th vertebrae of your lumber spine (lower back). If there’s any nerve impingement then this can cause numbness and/or tingling in the L5 dermatome. Could be other causes. See an Osteopath.

Onthebrink87 · 20/08/2018 18:37

I'm only saying footwear because mine have improved a fair amount after about 2 years of numbness by shelving the old faithfuls! But it could be coincidence and certainly not the only reason it could be happening. If you're concerned I'd see your gp to rule other causes out and try some sexy orthopaedic shoes! (Kidding just comfies that fit well!) But all the best and here's hoping shoddy shoes rather than shoddy health! Flowers

I get numb big toe on my left foot. I've also get sciatic pain down that leg so I'm assuming it's something to do with that?

RiojaHaze · 20/08/2018 18:58

Yes I had a blood test to work it out. I was knackered, breathless, had the numbness and my hair was falling out.

chronicallyexhausted · 20/08/2018 19:50

Thank you for all your helpful replies. I will investigate all this further and shelf my comfy shoes!
