Help itchy, stingy, tight scalp!! What shampoo?

Hi
I have had a really itchy lower scalp for over 6 months now and it's starting to drive me insane 😒. It constantly feels tight....itchy and at times really stings, also flakes aswell. I have to colour & highlight my hair (to cover grey) every 6 weeks so I have to be careful what products I use so that they don't strip the colour.
Any recommendations of shampoo & conditioner I could use? I have tried medical head & shoulders & Nizoral but they don't help. I think it's starting to spread upwards aswell , it's actually keeping me awake at night now as it's so itchy
Thanks!

To be honest I would stop the colouring , as I bet it's drying out your scalp.

Try dead sea spa magik Dead Sea Spa Magik Conditioning Scalp Mud 150ml/5oz www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000KUAJDS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_JNAEBbC1SA06Q?tag=mumsnetforum-21

No idea about hair colouring but this is great stuff

madyogafan · 19/08/2018 18:57

I'm sensitive to a lot of shampoos and use child's farm shampoo and conditioner. I also have coloured hair and it makes my hair really shiny.

MoMandaS · 19/08/2018 19:00

Eucerin Dermo-Capillaire.

welshmist · 19/08/2018 19:03

When I became menopausal, I found my scalp was a lot more sensitive so went to hairdresser who started using a gentle colour on my hair. I would speak to your hairdresser.

E45 shampoo

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 19/08/2018 21:25

Aphosyl. Recommended on here to me and works a treat. Stinks to high heaven though!

Studyinghell · 19/08/2018 21:28

U should try some oil, test patch obvs, but Rosemary or Lavender are normally good, put loads on and massage into scalp & sleep with it on, should help clear it up and then start trying very minimal chemical products.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 19/08/2018 21:28

Sorry, its Alphosyl.

Nutrogena t gel. Amazing stuff

thebunnies · 19/08/2018 21:29

Childs Farm. All natural and smells lovely. I use the shampoo or the body wash / shampoo combined and it’s brilliant. Don’t even need to use conditioner.

fairgame84 · 19/08/2018 21:30

I second Alphosyl, great when i get flare ups of dermatitis.

Abkbjbjb · 20/08/2018 08:54

Thank you all for your suggestions 😀I will start with Child's Farm as have some for the kids!
I have been colouring my hair for 20 years so doubt it is my hair colour (hope it's not....not ready to turn natural grey at 39!!)
Interesting someone mentioning menopause/hormones as I have been experiencing what could be peri-menopause .
Thanks everyone Smile

For god's sake don't put 'loads' of neat aromatherapy oil on your sensitive scalp! A couple of drops in a neutral carrier like almond or grapeseed oil maybe. I do mean grape not rapeseed.

thinkfast · 20/08/2018 10:00

I would do coconut oil on the scalp overnight to soothe it.

I have a very sensitive scalp which is prone to becoming itchy, flaky and sore. I tend to use either an organic, paraben and sulphate free shampoo - unscented if possible, but currently using vosene for sensitive scalp which is much cheaper and does the trick

JuniperBeer · 21/08/2018 07:52

‘Minimal chemical products’ give me strength @studyinghell
Even water is a ‘chemical’! Do you sell Doterra by any chance?

Naturally derived products though, is that what you meant to say!

Studyinghell · 21/08/2018 09:57

I meant something like baby shampoo or something for sensitive skin @JuniperBeer & I don’t sell anything thanks. Go stick a dick or something you mardy cow

I've had an itchy scalp all my life. As a last resort I've had Betnovate scalp lotion from GP.
Other things that help.
Never use the same shampoo for long.
Have various different ones and rotate them. I've used coal tar, alphosyl and nizoral shampoos but they don't help for long.
I've done the coconut oil overnight. Didn't help much or for long.
I no longer colour my hair and I never use any styling products.

The thing that has helped me most was suggested by my GP. I had very short hair which I washed daily and she suggested I wash it much less often. That was hard because it was a mess so I've grown it. I now have shoulder length hair at 60 for the first time in my adult life. I only wash it about every 4 days, it's in brilliant condition and my scalp, if not cured, is much better.

Clarabel22 · 21/08/2018 19:32

Another e45 fan here. I had an itchy, flaky scalp for years and eventually worked out I react to anything containing perfume. Switched to all unperfumed products and scalp is really clear now.

JuniperBeer · 21/08/2018 21:34

Yea alright @studyinghell because your advice to ‘put loads on’ of essentials oils was a really good idea 🙄 you should always mix essential oils with carriers. 😂 to stick a dick though!!

OP, really hope your head is better soon; any luck so far?

eurochick · 21/08/2018 21:41

I've had a dry itchy scalp for years. I tried everything, including loads of expensive and specialist products. What I've finally found works for me is L'Oréal's Low Shampoo. It's non-foaming. You have to rinse and rinse it but my scalp is finally fine and my hair is in decent condition too. They do a colour protect version. Clearly it was the foaming agent my scalp didn't like! I think it's trial and error to figure out what works for you.

Abkbjbjb · 26/08/2018 10:53

Thanks for all your repliesSmileso far I have tried childs Farm which hasn't irritated my scalp but my hair feel really dry! Now to defuse out a conditioner that won't irritate it 😩any ideas welcome!!

Ps I'm very allergic to anything e45 related. According to my gp its very common. I wouldn't try anything with e45.

I use either waitrose own brand conditioner for dry hair or boots coconut conditioner for dry hair. You could try those

flumpybear · 26/08/2018 20:03

I use coconut oil when alphosyl doesn't work fir me - I melt it and put it on in the bath then wrap my hair up and leave it overnight

Ollivander84 · 26/08/2018 20:11

Moogoo conditioner is fantastic, or the child's farm one
