Varicose Veins-Foam treatment???

Just wondered if anyone had had their veins treated by having foam injected into them?

I may have the option instead of the good old stripping and GA but wondered how well it worked.

I have just had the VNUS procedure - where they use radio waves to get rid of the veins. It was under local anaesthetic and took about 45 mins for both legs. Still wearing stockings a week later, so no idea how it is going to turn out. This is certainly FAR less invasive than stripping the vein, but not exactly the walk in the park I was led to believe it would be. Apparently the foam injections are only good for small veins and not the big one that most people get. I was told there would be little or no bruising and have one MASSIVE bruise on my thigh but almost nothing elsewhere. I took a couple of anadin for the first two days. For me, the worst thing is wearing this flipping stocking - especially when it was warm at the weekend. You can't take it off at all, although apparently it is possible to get a shield for when you want a shower - this wasn't available to me. Hope this helps....

I know you can have saline injected into spider veins, is it similar to that? It's supposed to be quite good. I want to look into it. I'm 29 and have legs that look like they belong on a pensioner.

porridgeoats, are you in the uk, did you get that on the nhs? sorry for being beaky!

porridgeoats · 06/06/2007 10:51

No! I don't think you can get any treatment on the NHS for this any more (at least this is what my doctor told me).

I haven't had saline injections, but I thought the local was pretty painful. Didn't feel anything else, apart from that. I do think that now, a week later, I am glad I've had it done. I didn't feel comfortable wearing skirts and they were definitely getting much worse - thanks baby number 2!

Chopster · 06/06/2007 15:54

I'm sure you can get stripping done on the nhs, my mum's friend had it done recently. Not sure about any other forms though.

Thanks Porridgeoats-I wondered how long the stockings would have to stay on.
Interesting about foam only being suitable for small veins-I wouldn't class mine as small.

I don't think you can get thread vein treatment on the NHS-it is described as "cosmetic" but there are lots of places which do sclerotherapy.

I think it depends where in the country you live to whether you can have anything done. When I lived in the midlands I was told that they wouldn't do anything about my varicose veins (which are really bad) until I got a leg ulcer! But, having recently moved south, my doctor sent me to a specialist at the hospital who sent me for a Doppler scan to see what he can do. Still waiting to go back for results. Although not holding my breath to whether they can do anything as my deep veins are damaged from 2 DVTs.
