In pain every day, what are my rights?

I've got a history of Ovarian cysts that don't budge. I've had one taken out in 2012 and currently have a 5cm cyst on one side.

I also had a baby 6 months ago. I started off having pain around the cyst area but it has now spread to the other side too, where there is no cyst.

I've also been suffering from problems with my bowels off and on, with lots of lower back pain. Sometimes I have diarrhea, sometimes constipation, sometimes it feels like I can't fully empty my bowels.

The pain is getting worse each day and now I can feel like a pressure in my vagina, as if something is pressing on my cervix, if that makes sense? It's also spread to both my hips, pubic bone and my upper legs.

I'm really concerned it's something serious that is spreading. I'm 28 with no family history of any kind of cancer but my GP seems very reluctant to do anything other than tell me to take pain killers. I've asked for a colonoscopy and he said no. I'm due to have the cyst rescanned this week but I'm not sure a cyst would explain these symptoms.

I've looked at the cost of going private but it's going to be at least £1500 and I need a GP referall anyway!

Has anyone been in this position?

I'd be thinking down the line of changing GP. You know your own body. I'd be going with my gut instinct.

BuzzKilllington · 15/08/2018 22:40

My GP has indicated that he thinks it could be IBS but there seems to be no correlation between my symptoms and whether or not I have eaten or what I have eaten.

I'm just getting increasingly concerned. I may try and speak to another GP at the surgery tomorrow

I'm no medical expert by any means, but if the cyst has grown, could that explain the pain and pressure you're feeling. It definitely needs further follow up and I would keep chasing with your GP.

Wendygoesfar · 15/08/2018 22:58

It sounds like you might have a prolapse, have a look and see if the symptoms/sensation feels the same - get a gynae referral or gynae physio for the pain..

In reference to the bowel issues a diagnosis of ibs should only be given after everything else more sinister has been ruled out first as there is no test for ibs per se it is only diagnosed after all other tests are clear. My husband has had ibs since 16 years old and was given a battery of tests first including a colnoscopy (sorry sp?). I would ask to speak to another gp and tell them you want a formal diagnosis via testing. I'm sorry I don't have any advice about the cysts as I have no experience.

I've being having the exact same symptoms as you op, I've had swaps taken and a smear and I'm now awaiting a scan.
The doctor thinks it could be a ovarian cyst, I've had pain in one side of my pelvis, hip pain, the pain gets worse when I need to use the toilet, pressure as well.

Pufflemum · 17/08/2018 10:45

Without wishing to scare you you need to see a new GP. I had very similar issues and am now 6 months into treatment for incurable cancer. It was detected from a colonoscopy, a pelvic scan was clear.
My GP ignored my symptoms for 8 months and suggested I do Pilates to strengthen my core after having two babies. That delay may end my life early, so please ring today and make a new appointment.
Tell the GP you have a change in bowel habits, that is eventually what triggered my referral. I did pay to speed up the colonoscopy process but this caused delays down the line , so if you can get a quick nhs appointment stick with that. Good luck, I'm sure you will be fine.

Can I ask, did you pass blood in your stools Puffle? Please don't feel obligated to answer. I'm very sorry to hear about your illness 😞 I do hope chemo can keep your cancer at bay for a long long time.

The GP has agreed to take bloods and the next appointment is 3rd September. My abdominal ultrasound is today.

I'm just going out so will reply fully later, but just briefly, I had a grapefruit sized ovarian cyst removed about 5 years ago which was causing almost all the symptoms you've mentioned above. I'll be back later.

Pufflemum · 17/08/2018 11:07

Hi Buzz

No blood in stools, no abnormal periods, perfectly normal bloods so a medical mystery! It is actually a very rare form of cancer so I hope not to alarm anyone. It was the feeling of constant pressure and leg pain that stood out of the op post that made me post.

So far my treatment is progressing well and I still hope to reach old age, my current medical team are fantastic. Incurable is different to terminal so fingers crossed.

eurochick · 17/08/2018 13:43

I suspect a cyst or prolapse plus endo. Change gp if yours won't help.

Littlefish · 17/08/2018 14:43

I'm back.

I had been suffering for some time with bowel issues, pain on my left hand side, below my belly button. I saw my gp several times and was told it was IBS. I worked with this diagnosis, looked at my diet etc. but nothing seemed to get better. I suffered from diarrhoea and constipation on a regular basis.

6 weeks after I had dd I was taken into hospital with excruciating pain in the same place. I was investigated for kidney stones and given this diagnosis, even though no kidney stones were ever found.

7 weeks after that, I was hospitalised again with horrific pain. This time, I was investigated for pelvic infection and given this diagnosis, even though no infection was ever found.

I was seen in follow-up by a consultant and told that it was likely that I had diverticulitis. This was followed by a colonoscopy, however, no evidence of diverticulitis could be found.

About 6 years later, I was suffering from all the symptoms of prolapse (alongside the IBS). I saw a consultant and we agreed that I would have a mesh sling put in place to support my uterus.

However, in the operation, instead of finding a prolapse, the consultant found a large dermoid cyst, wrapped around my ovary, strangulating it. The cyst, along with my ovary and fallopian tube was removed.

When I met my consultant afterwards he said that the cyst had been growing for approximately 10 years. The weight of the cyst pushing down on my uterus, bowel and bladder was causing all the symptoms of posterior, anterior and uterine prolapse, but also, was constricting the bowel and causing my IBS symptoms.

He suspected that the my two hospital visits when dd was a baby was the cyst twisting and partially rupturing.

Since I had the cyst removed 5 years ago I haven't had any issues at all!

Please go back to your GP surgery and see if you can change to another GP. Failing that, move surgeries, but don't allow your current GP to fob you off. Good luck.

BuzzKilllington · 17/08/2018 15:02

My ultrasound showed that my cyst is 5cm and has a septation, which I knew already from the last scan 4 months ago. He said the other ovary looks ok but wouldn't/couldn't tell me anything else. So I need to speak with the GP in a week's time.

Where he was scanning though was much more central in my abdomen than where the pain is so I'm not convinced it's due to the cyst.
