Can anyone give any insight into the cost of a private urologist? Regarding incontinence in an older lady.
Doctors are moving on to talking about catheters but it seems very quick with little medical avenues tried.
Thankyou for any input anyone has

Can't speak for a urologist but in general it's about £250ish for a private consultation. Usually a bit less for follow up. Any investigations will be additional. Any private prescriptions will be additional.

Being honest - there aren't a lot of medical avenues for incontinence. There are a couple of drugs and that's it.

Thankyou for replying. I'm just desperate to help.

Urogynaecology may be managed by urologists but is more commonly treated by gynaecologists. It isn't necessarily something that just any urologist/gynaecologist can help with either. If you are going to go private (I agree that £250 is a ballpark figure for a consultant opinion) then try to find someone specialising in urogynaecology, either in their private or NHS practice. Google suggests quite a few different options depending on where you are.

Ideally take all letters and test results with you so that you only need one appointment. If you write to your NHS hospital and/or GP then they should provide all the letters and test results so far.

Just ask for a second opinion from another NHS urologist. You don't need to pay to have that privately

A work colleague was recently told they had inoperable oesophageal cancer and given 6 months to live. She was discouraged from seeking a second opinion but did so anyway and had chemo, an operation and is now cancer free.

It's not easy with often intimidating NHS consultants but I would encourage anyone not happy with the management plan offered to say they'd like a second opinion from another consultant. In the case of my colleague from another trust because as all the staff from her original hospital of course agreed with her senior consultant.

If you ring your local private hospital (spire if they are close to you) the receptionist will talk you through the costs. Maximum we've ever paid for a private consultation has been £275 and the longest wait has been a week.

HoleyCoMoley · 16/08/2018 14:26

What help has she has so far, I would ask for a second opinion and a referral to the incontinence nurse.

I'm sorry I didn't realise there were more replies.
She's on betmiga at the moment, they've just doubled the dose.
She's unable to do any exercise at all so no physical therapy can help.
She's been seeing a urologist and she's been given two months to improve or he wants to go with the catheter. She's desperate not to and I'm just feeling a bit useless to help

If you are in London PM me. I can recommend an excellent female urogynaecologist.

In our area (Kent UK) I'd be recommending you contact the bladder and bowel team - multi disciplinary NHS service that does what it says on the tin (as it were). Might be something similar near you??

I've just seen a Urologist privately. It was £150 for the initial consultation and will be £110 for the follow up appointment. Best money I've ever spent.
