Ear wax tips / don’t want to put oil in my ears before syringing

I am 14 week’s pregnant and have had extra waxy and wet ears since about 5/6 week’s. I have been to the doctors a couple of times and they have confirmed no infection just excess wax and recommend syringing.

Problem is they want me to use olive oil drops 2-3 times a day for 5 days before he appointment to soften the wax but doing anything with my ears and triggering the “wet” feeling (which the drops will do) makes me feel nauseous and I haven’t been able to bring myself to do it. I even cancelled my last syringing appointment.

I now have an appointment on Friday so contemplating whether it is too late to start using he drops today and also whether I can even bring myself to do that. Honestly when the wax is runny and it runs out of my wars(!) it is gross.

Someone once said that of they put olive oil in and then lay head on a hot water bottle the wax came out. I could maybe do that as a one off if I can find a HWB...

😩

Just do it for one day - three times the day before and on the morning of appointment.

If you don’t do it they might not get wax out.

If you don't use the oil, the wax probably won't be soft enough to remove. It's a bit late for Friday either way though...

I know! I just really can’t stomach the thought but I need to do something as I’m worried I’m going to get earache soon!

Use the olive oil.
Please.
It is a horrible position to put the HCP in if you haven’t used enough olive oil to soften it for easy removal.

AliceRR · 14/08/2018 18:17

@whatsthisbear I’m not planning on going to the appointment without having used the oil. Just putting it off again! Or open to other solutions which is he reason I am on here!

look if there is an clear ear clinic near you.
they use suction instead of syringing.
much safer and wax is less likely to build up again.

princesstiasmum · 14/08/2018 18:21

I will be very surprised if they will even syringe your ears at all if you dont put olive oil or otex in to soften the wax, it took 3 weeks to get mine syringed because the wax wasnt soft enough
My Drs wont do it now if oil isnt used,as several people have ended up in hospital with burst ear drums,
Just do it

AliceRR · 14/08/2018 18:53

@bluerunningshoes I have heard of that but thought that still involved olive oil

@princesstiasmum I already said I don’t plan to go to the appointment if I haven’t used oil...

Lots of surgeries don't syringe at all now so you are lucky it is being done.
Cancel and rebook the appt to give the correct length of time to put the oil in and then make sure you do it!

Whatsthisbear · 14/08/2018 19:10

Ahhh - misunderstood. (Can you tell I do eat syringes as part of my job.) Grin

There are places that do private suction removal but it is around £40 in our area. Have never heard of the hot water bottle method but......worth a try. Good luck

Tinysarah1985 · 14/08/2018 23:20

Try Earol olive oil spray (from pharmacy). Few little squrts of that a day will soften it but not give you thr wet ear feeling.

AliceRR · 17/08/2018 18:53

Thank you

Another suction recommendation. No softening before was needed for my 6yo with terrible waxy ears which kept blocking water in and getting infections.
