XENICAL, REDUCTIL, OR ACOMPLIA WHICH IS BEST?

I have approached my doctor for slimming pills and have been told I have to lose 5kgs before they will prescribe. The thing is my weight seems to have plateaued. But that could be due to increased exercise.
Obviously muscle weighs more than fat so if I am exercising more my muscle mass is increasing and fat mass going down!
I have 4 stone to lose and am pretty desperate to do it as I am taking part in a charity cycle event in January next year.

Has anyone been prescibed any of the above and how successful have they been?

Don't do it.

They are amphetimines and will send your bp through the roof. Bad form to have heart attack halfway across sub-continent. Stick to the diet.

CycleIndia2008 · 03/06/2007 16:21

I would stop taking them a month before we leave.. just need a kick start as never ever been overweight like this before! Always been 9st maximum before having my youngest!

Would a slimming club help instead?

CycleIndia2008 · 03/06/2007 16:27

Cant really afford that on a regular basis either to be honest. Any spare cash I do have has gone into expenses involved in doing this challenge.. registration fee, equipment, organising fundraising etc etc. I was told by doc they would forward my details onto a local slimming group but heard nothing since and that was about a month ago now. Going to docs again this week to remind them and ask about the pills

xenical not an amphetamine just stops fat being absorbed so you eat less or else have really revolting poo

Blandmum · 05/06/2007 15:16

Reductil isn't an amphetamine either. It similar (but not identical) to the structure of Prozac. It works by haping your brain to send signals that you are full, sooner.

In the UK you will not be prescribed reductil unless your are clinically obese, and have shown that you can lose weight on a calorie controled diet.

In clinical trials patients on REductil lost on average 7 KG more than those on just a calorie controled diet.

But you still have to diet ( I was involved in the development of this drug)

ungratefuldaughter · 05/06/2007 15:21

people have been known to get round this initial weight loss rule by going to doc's in february then back three months later having lost a fair amount of weight (along with vests, jumpers, tights, thick clothes etc)

Budababe · 05/06/2007 15:25

MB - why do you have to prove you can lose weight on a calorie controlled diet? If I could bloody lose weight I wouldn't need drugs! Not getting at you but just would like to know!

ungratefuldaughter · 05/06/2007 15:31

if you look at the trials for reductil the effect is much, much greater with diet and pills combined so need to show you can do it, some people take the pills just so they can keep on with the chips

Blandmum · 05/06/2007 15:34

It was part of the licence requirements
It will only really work if you diet. But it does significantly increase the likelihood of the diet working IYSWIM. I think that the licenec authority wanted to make clear that this isn't a 'magic pill' that will work all on its own.

In particular is was 'aimed' at patients ho needed to lose weight prior to, say surgery, and will significantly help them to get the weight off.

Without a diet, it isn't going to do much , and like all prescription drugs it comes with a risk. I guess the doctors want to see that you can diet, prior to you being given the drug.

ungratefuldaughter · 05/06/2007 15:36

just don't mix the xenical with fish and chips and expect the drains to work afterwards

Blandmum · 05/06/2007 15:37

Or be tempted to fart

Budababe · 05/06/2007 15:38

Thanks - can sort of see why but I can stick to any diet for all of about 2 days! Managed 3 months on Atkins 3 years ago. Managed a week on it last month!

I can see it would need to be in conjunction with a diet plan of some sort and it would hopefully help to stick to diet.

CycleIndia2008 · 05/06/2007 17:39

I am using it as a deterant from eating crap food! As the after effects as so well put would be horendous! I know it isn't a miracle cure to my weight problem, just a kick start for me to keep it going! I did manage to lose 3kgs so that made me feel better.
I too find it hard to stick to a particular type of diet for any length of time. Although I haven't had such a weight problem before having my youngest. I was only 57kgs at 10 wks pregnant with her! Partly an age thing too I'm sure and depression previously but I have gone up to 89kgs at heaviest and I'm only 5' 2"

I was given xenical to lose weight for an operation (was scared they wouldn't do it if I didn't).

Lost a stone in four weeks and kept it off quite well. Only thing was I kind of lost control of my bowel ocassionally!!!!!

Def need to keep to a low fat diet if using this (not read all of thread so sorry if repeating someone else).

Having had DS now am desperate to lose weight, asked Dr for it again but new Dr and won't give me it HTH!

CycleIndia2008 · 05/06/2007 20:23

If I was you I would threaten to buy them off then net if they don't help out with it for a month at least.. Thats what I was going to do if my doc refused again.
Couldnt afford to buy online but thought it would be worth threatening ..

Wasn't Acomplia removed from the market worldwide in 2008/2009? Are you taking a banned substance Kikst?
