Worried about DS (4) drowsy all day

Not sure what is wrong with him, but he's not right at all.

Yesterday and today he's been very quiet, sitting still, a bit snuffly, and been sick a couple of times. He won't eat and has hardly had anything to drink either, tried offering lollies and ice cubes but he couldn't manage them

He says 'it's only a cold, mummy' and that nothing hurts...sometimes says his tummy hurts though, but not crying, so I don't think it's severe pain.

He had a temp of about 38.5 yesterday, today it's down to about 37.7 so that's good at least...but so quiet, and pale, and his cheeks are red.

He slept all afternoon for about 4 hours, woke for maybe 90 mins then fell asleep again - really deep sleep though, he's just not himself. Keeps muttering in his sleep as well.

I feel sure he's coming down with something but has had his jabs, any ideas what could be wrong? I feel like sitting watching him all night, he's just like a different child iykwim.

Poor soul

I have had a nasty cold lately and even today had to go back to bed for a few hours

he may just have something like that

but if you are concerned what about nhs direct? Can you sleep on a mattress in his room? I have done this to put my mind at rest and also be closer to hand if ds needed me

flightattendant · 02/06/2007 22:49

Thanks Franny&Zooey. You know that late night worrying thing you get when you just want to shake them and shout 'wake up and be your usual self, I need to know you're alright!'
Then by morning they are their usual self and you miss the peace and quiet

He usually sleeps in with me so that's not too bad. Will see how he is tomorrow. So strange not to have his continual chattering and racing around though.

I did talk to the out of hours Dr. who said it's not anything specific enough to treat, but keep an eye and try to keep him hydrated. Case of wait and see I suppose.

Thankyou

My babymonkey has been the same today, he is a bit snotty and hot on his little ginger head too. And his friend from over the road is also the same. Actually I've been feeling a bit crappy too. Think there's a nasty cold thing flying around. Babymonkey is 19mths and his friend is 4 BTW)

FrannyandZooey · 02/06/2007 22:52

You're welcome, I am sorry I couldn't be more specific or reassuring

FWIW it sounds like his body is dealing with it very effectively (not eating, sleeping lots etc) but I always think you know your child and if alarm bells are ringing at any point I would get someone out to see him

(I presume you have checked his body for a rash? I might check again in the night, just in case)

Hope all is well though and that tomorrow he is on the mend

flightattendant · 02/06/2007 22:56

Yup, can't find any rash so far but will keep looking, that's the scariest thing in case it's something sinister...but hopefully the lessening temp is a good sign.

Off to try and wake him enough to get up to bed...cannot carry him at 39wks pg! Wish me luck!

Oh lord I had not realised you were highly pregnant as well

how is he this morning? What sort of a night did you have?

lizziemun · 03/06/2007 06:53

It sounds like how i have been since thursday.

I had a realy snotty nose on thursday and very tired, it was a bit better on friday but yesterday i could keep anything down (sorry if tmi). If its any help i do feel better today.

hope you ds is feeling better today.

flightattendant · 03/06/2007 07:10

Thanks, ladies...did somehow find superhuman strength to carry him upstairs, that was a surprise! He slept well till about 2.30am then woke to throw up a couple of times, then slept till about 6 and doesn't seem any worse, so I'm kind of relieved. He is having very weak tea instead of the usual milk this morning, will see if he has any appetite later. Temp still down thank goodness.

So it looks like a sicky sort of bug I think, poor mite. Now I'm really hoping I don't catch it when I'm about to go into labour, just what you need !

Thanks for reassuring me last night

FA keep washing your hands, esp after you have touched him or been near him

it's the most protective thing you can do if you have to be around a sickness bug

flightattendant · 03/06/2007 10:22

Excellent, I didn't know that but will do...a bit of an emetophobe at heart, don't mind him being sick as long as I don't have to! So have been being quite careful...

He's eaten a bit this morning, thrown it up, then asked for more and kept it down (so far ) also seems much brighter and annoying again! So I suspect the worst is over...I can deal with most stuff but not seeing him all quiet and weird.

Thanks again for all the advice, you're so kind

poor little one, sounds like he is on the mend though

yes I have been told that handwashing is definitely the best protection

best of luck with staying well
