My 10 month old has worms

Hi everyone,
Got a real shock earlier when my dd did a poo whilst not wearing her nappy - it had a little white worm in it - have googled it and it seems to be threadworms. I've never experienced anything like this as my ds, dh or I have not had them (maybe do now though!!).

I'm really quite worried as, though she's a good eater, her weight has consistently dropped over the last 4 months, so much so that I stopped breastfeeding last week and we've been trying (rather unsuccessfully) to wean her onto formula to boost her weight. I'm now wondering whether the worms could be the cause - although have never spotted them before - she wears cloth nappies - so do tend to see her poo!

Anyway, I know I need to get some medication, but wondered if anyone had any other advice re: cleaning/approaching childminder etc etc.... as I'm a bit freaked out!
Thanks

Oh my god!!! Not like I haven't got enough to do!!! Could they have come from my 5 yr old - he complained of an itchy bot a couple of times in the last week.

DD is at a childminders, started 4 weeks ago - do I have to ensure she does all this too??? Hope I don't sound snotty, but we already really push the handwashing thing as she's still so little, and I reckon we're quite good on the hygiene front - is this a typical thing to get from school/somewhere else???

Oh, and should I check my own poo (not sure I could cope with that!!!) - as I don't have an itchy bot (how embarrassing....)?

That's great advice from Kerry, nico.

One thing I would add is that if your dd had had worms for a longer period (for instance, the 4 month weight-drop period you mentioned), you would have noticed them by now. If you've only spotted several worms, it seems that the infestation is in the early stages, and a simple visit to the GP will clear it up.

I suffered intermittently with worms until my late teens. No one else in my family did, but really, it could get quite gross at times!

But do follow Kerry's advice until it clears up, and good luck!

If you're five year old is complaining of an itchy bum, it's almost certain that he has them too. Could be wrong, but ....

Contracting threadworm is nothing to do with lack of hygiene. It's very common - just not the sort of thing many people are prepared to discuss in RL.
