Dermoid cyst on ovary

When I was pregnant at my first scan they found an 8-10cm Dermoid cyst on my ovary. I’ve had various scans since giving birth and it’s still there so I have now been given the option of having it removed via key hole surgery. Anyone experienced this ? It isn’t causing any issues for me now but if I get pregnant again it can twist and be very painful meaning emergency surgery to have it removed , if it twists or erupts i may lose my ovary / tube. The planned surgery is done in such a way to avoid damaging the ovary / tube but it cannot be guarenteed. Unsure what to do for the best

Have it removed, in the long term that will be better for you. Don't be scared, dermoid cysts are not that uncommon. My aunt had one, it was removed and she was fine - as are most people but you need to get it done soon. It sounds as though you have a good team looking after you.

I have one on my right ovary, I'm having it removed next month, from what the consultant said, it's a really quick and straightforward operation.

OP, they don’t have to twist or rupture for you to lose any ovary. I had a large demoid removed & lost my ovary & Fallopian tube. I would definitely have it taken out. I had mine removed over ten years and it was a tough recovery. It wasn’t key hole though so I don’t know if that would make a difference. I’ve had 3 c sections and it was harder than those. Having one ovary didn’t make any difference to my fertility but I did feel a difference hormones wise. Doctors will say it makes no difference but I really do think it does.

Get it out. I had an 18lb one removed 17 years ago plus my tube and ovary.

I had one. Just like you it was found on the first scan. Had it removed when baby was around 6 months I think. Surgery was day case. At home by tea time. Was very straightforward. Can't remember having any issues (other than them forgetting that I was breastfeeding, had to remind them at every stage to be sure the drugs were compatible). Second baby born 3 years later with no issues. Good luck. It's worrying but if you're like me you will sail through it.

They found similar when I was first pregnant, and i had it removed when my baby was a year old last summer. It was keyhole, day surgery, took a few days to recover and then probably a few weeks before I felt 100%. Really glad I got it done, it wasn’t pleasant but not bad at all in the greater scheme of things. Much better I think to get it removed in a planned, strategic way rather than emergency surgery if it started to twist/ cause problems, as that’s when it’s more likely to be open surgery (which takes far far longer to recover from) and also more likely to damage ovary etc. Good luck whatever you decide.

It’s amazing how things have moved on surgery wise. Having that done as a day case is fantastic. Wish it had been like that years ago.

Definitely get it removed. I had one that twisted whilst on the waiting list for surgery. The pain was excruciating and it had to be removed via emergency non keyhole surgery along with the ovary. Mine also appeared during pregnancy and was removed when my ds was 18 months old
