Losing a lot of weight, gp says I'm 'lucky'

I know this must sound like a bragging post, as I know a lot of people struggle with weight loss, but it's really not intended to be one.

I've always been slim and tall. I'm a 24 year old 5ft11 female and my weight has always normally been around 9 1/2 to 10 stone.

Over the last few months my weight has started to drop with no help from myself.
It dropped to 9 stone and my gp sent me for blood tests which came back fine.

She said I must just be one of the 'lucky ones'

Anyways over the last month I've slowly lost more and am now sitting at 8stone 4. I feel tired and irritated and again, they just said it must be my body's make-up.

I'm eating A LOT, even when I'm not hungry, with no results. Is there not something else I can do to make them take me a bit more seriously?
I know my weight isn't THAT low, but it's a little horrifying to look at.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And again, I hope I haven't offended anyone.
Thank you

At 8st 4lb, you're now in the underweight category according to BMI - unintentional weight loss to that degree and in that time frame usually means it needs investigation.

Go back to your GP with a record of your weight loss and other symptoms (feelings of tiredness/irritability) and tell them just how worried you are.

Hope they're more helpful this time Flowers

GinaCarbonara · 08/08/2018 18:28

Have you had any other symptoms? I can't believe they're not going to investigate further, that's terrible!

1234hello · 08/08/2018 18:35

I agree you should go back to the GP (possibly a different one?) and say that you are concerned. If you are still fobbed off, ask them to put their opinion in writing.

crazydoglady6867 · 08/08/2018 18:40

Did they check your thyroid.
Check the symptoms of an overactive thyroid see if any of it applies to you then go and see another GP

jelliebelly · 08/08/2018 18:41

See a different gp - unexplained weight loss needs investigating pronto

Racecardriver · 08/08/2018 18:45

You are not lucky. You are sick. What is you appetite like? Have you experienced any other symptoms? Swelling? Yellow skin? This happened to my mother shortly before she died. You need to find a doctor who takes you seriously.

Sorry to hear about your mum but bit unnecessary to scare the op.

Do go back to another GP op Flowers

BigSandyBalls2015 · 08/08/2018 18:47

That's a very low weight for your height and the GP should be taking it more seriously esp as you're eating a lot and it's unexplained weight loss.

bluerunningshoes · 08/08/2018 18:48

back to gp
unintentional weightloss is a big red flag for some serious medical issues.

have you given a stool sample (giardia, worms, bleeding)?
thyroid is a good one.
have you been tested for coeliacs (blood test only indication)?
are you bruising easily?

Bombardier25966 · 08/08/2018 18:56

Can you see another doctor? Lots of GPs see any weight loss as good and fail to recognise that it can be an indicator that something is wrong. Thyroid was my first thought too, but it's certainly not the only possible cause.

@Racecardriver Do you not think before you post, or do you deliberately post contentious comments to get a reaction?

Racecardriver · 08/08/2018 18:59

@Bombardier I didn't realise that rapid unexplained weightloss was contentious... Most people would consider that an indication of a serious medical problem. OP needs to see ankthet doctor ASAP.

digerd · 08/08/2018 19:22

I lost lots of weight within a year but also had other symptoms. I had Hyper thyroidism, constantly ravenous and constantly eating. Also became paranoid, flew into rages and was permanently hot and sweating even in the winter.
GP eventually diagnosed it by my shaky hands, bulging eyes and swollen Thyroid gland, when I was 25.
I became very weak and short of breath - unable to climb stairs.
Not everyone experiences all my symptoms.

You may not have Thyroid problems but you should be examined to find the source of your unexplained weight loss.

Stress and berievement are the 2 most common natural causes of weight loss.
Good luck

Abitlost2015 · 08/08/2018 19:23

Book an appointment to see a different GP. Did the bloods includ thyroid function? Are you experiencing any other symptoms? Sweating at night? Unexplained bruising? Sleeping more than usual?

penguinsnpandas · 10/08/2018 00:32

I would be concerned too as its a red flag for lots of cancers, hopefully its nothing like that but they need to be running more checks, just basic bloods aren't enough. There's a lady on another thread with similar and after a year has just been diagnosed with bowel cancer after being fobbed off. That's very much the worst case scenario and its hopefully something much more minor but if it is serious the sooner its caught the better. I wouldn't assume its anything serious but would push for more tests.

MollyHuaCha · 10/08/2018 07:15

Definitely go back to the GP. Good luck.
