Recurring cystitis?

I’ve suffered with cystisis for about 12 years now. Some months I get it two, three maybe four times. Other months I don’t get it at all. I’ve had a lot of UTI’s in the past but I can tell the difference between the two. Although cystisis is painful, I can usually get rid of it by using a cystisis powder sachet whereas nothing helps my UTI’s other than antibiotics.

I do everything I can to try and prevent getting cystisis such as peeing straight after sex, wiping front to back, not using perfumed soaps or shower gels around that area. I try and drink plenty of fluids but there will be days where I get really busy and just don’t have time to down pints of water. On these days, I will always get cystisis. I haven’t had it bad enough that I need to take a powder sachet in a few months now but this month I’ve had it badly twice. Today I was so busy doing uni work that I just forgot to get a drink and now I’m suffering.

Is it normal to have cystisis every single time you don’t drink lots? I know that drinking lots helps to prevent it and that by not doing that, you can cause it to flare up, but every time? I end up spending hours in the bathroom in pain until the sachet takes effect. It’s such a horrible stinging pain and not something I can take antibiotics for because it’s not an infection. It makes me so miserable and ends up ruining a lot of things for me. I do sometimes get it even if I drink enough fluids.

I know that the most obvious solution is drink more but that’s not always possible because I’m busy at work or studying and I’m not a big drinker anyway as in I am never really that thirsty and I find forcing myself to drink so much makes me feel nauseous.

Would it be worth speaking to a doctor or will they just tell me to drink more, take cranberry supplements and just kind of deal with it? I wouldn’t be bothered if it was just something that happened now and again but for it to happen every single time I don’t drink 8 pints of water is kind of frustrating.

It sounds like interstitial cystitis to me (I have a good friend who suffers from it). Worth checking out the symptoms to see if they tally and/or visiting the GP, definitely. Unfortunately my friend has had to learn to manage it over the years rather than it being treated as such, but I think it always helps to know what you're dealing with.
