Fibroids & heavy periods what works

Im 40 & suffering from very heavy periods lasting for 8 days and getting them every 23/26 days.

Started taking progesterone only pill last month and have being bleeding for the last 10 days. Should I try fully combined pill? Was hoping to avoid due to turning me into a banshee in the past. Reluctant to try mirena due to cost & side effects.

Ive fibroids which are possibly the reson for the heavy periods combined with my age. Im waiting to see gynaecologist about further treatment.

In the meantime has anyone similar experience & what has worked for them. Im so fed up with the constant bleeding.

The only thing that worked for me was a hysterectomy. I tried everything and nothing worked or was without side effects. Mirena for me was just horrendous for side effects and I bled non stop with it. Hope you find so ething that does work for you.

I ended up with a hysterectomy too.

But before getting to that stage Mirena worked well for my for about 18 months, until the fibroid grew more and pushed it out of my cervix. Tranexamic acid cut the blood loss by around 30%.

Thanks for the replies. Im taking tranexamic acid & neurofen on the really bad days and it helps a bit but I worry about having to take them so often.

I dont think I can hack another 10/12 years of these periods.

I had a hysterectomy too. Was obviously very final to do that but I couldn’t go on, could barely work or function during period etc. I didn’t get offered coil as my fibroid was in the uterine wall and unremovable. My iron levels were shot and I kept getting a tongue infection. I’ve never looked back after the op. Good luck Op, it’s just so awful bleeding like that

Ablation worked for me although it took twelve months to settle down and the bleeding to finally stop.

If I had my time again I would choose a hysterectomy.

Embolization.

If it’s suitable for you it works brilliantly. Don’t let your GP drag their feet.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Mirena coil worked for about 18 months

Ablation failed

Hysterectomy in June 2017 BEST thing I ever did!

I'm 49.

I bled continuously for months and months. Took Northisterone which helped.

EllenRipley · 05/08/2018 18:19

I suffered the same at your age and had one small fibroid which may or may not have contributed.
Heavy bleeding can often signal a hormone imbalance, usually high estrogen relative to progesterone. I didnt want surgical or synthetic hormone intervention so did some research and used a supplement called DIM (acronym for a word I can't spell off the top of my head) which works on excess estrogen. It really helped.
Diet (particularly removing anything estrogenic) & exercise are important too. There are also herbs which could help. Make sure your doc keeps an eye on your iron and serum ferritin levels levels too, they could easily become low with heavy bleeding and exacerbate the problem.
It's a horrible thing, you have my complete sympathies!

I had a mirena fitted at 44yrs and after about 6 months of discomfort, it settled down to virtually no periods other than the odd bit of spotting. Fantastic relief. I'm 53 and it's still in there.
